Craig and Ruth Gimbel made a seven-figure commitment to the Discovery Center four years ago this month! That was well before
knowing that the Discovery Center would even be built. We can’t thank the Gimbels enough for their early support that enabled the project to move forward.

Tonight’s Blue Moon is rising right here in Fountain Hills — the second full moon of May, a rare micromoon at its farthest from Earth. Thanks to our International Dark Sky Community, we get to see it in all its glory without light pollution washing it out.

Head outside after sunset, look east near Antares, and soak in those true dark skies. Once in a blue moon moments like this are why we protect our night sky! 🌕✨

Huge thanks to Christina Dicksen from Experience Scottsdale for setting it up and showing how we can partner on events and promotion. Exciting times for the Center! 🌌

Thor’s Helmet Nebula, a cosmic Viking in the sky! Imagine a glowing blue warrior’s helmet floating among the stars, its intricate details carved by stellar winds and radiation. This breathtaking nebula, captured by photographer Scott Adams, is officially known as NGC 2359. Located about 15,000 light years away in the constellation Canis Major, it’s powered by a massive Wolf-Rayet star at its center, blasting out intense radiation that sculpts the surrounding gas into this dramatic shape.

While our doors at the International Dark Sky Discovery Center aren’t open quite yet, we’re working hard to create a space where you can experience truly dark skies and connect with the cosmos. Stay tuned for our opening in early January 2027!

What’s the coolest nebula or cosmic object you’d love to see? Drop it in the comments! 🌌🔭
