Last week, we had the absolute privilege of traveling to the Eastern Sierra Madre mountains and visiting families of folks who are keeping our dairy farms running smoothly here in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Every single home that we visited was full of warmth and love that presented itself in many ways: from hot drinks (made from coffee and fruit and corn grown right there on family land), to questions about loved one's safety, to warm tortillas, to hearing how much the employer of their family member appreciates and takes care of them, to delicious meals and flavorful salsas, to houses and businesses that have been built through long hours and sacrifices across the miles, to simultaneous tears of joy and sadness, and more.
Amidst the hugs and meals and tears and conversations, we felt a human connection that reminded us of the most important things in this world. When we sit down face to face, no matter what our cultural background is, we cannot help but see how much there is that unites us. Each one of us cares deeply for our family members and we would move mountains to make sure that those we love are well and can have opportuntities to create lives where they, all of us can thrive.
Thank you to every family that we visited in Tlaquilpa, Texhuacan, Zongolica, Atlahuilco, Tequila, and Cuernavaca, for all that you shared and for all that you taught us. We are carrying your hospitality and generosity and kindness with us. You motivate us to keep creating communities where we all see how much more there is that binds us to one another than that which separates us.
