We take in senior dogs. It's all we do and we've been doing it for over a decade. Unfortunately the majority of dogs who come to us have not received proper vet care throughout their lives. Many are intact, need masses removed, or are in desperate need of dental care.
We work closely with our vets to determine if a dog can have surgery. Everyone gets full senior bloodwork. If they have a heart murmur then they get an echocardiogram. If they have elevated liver values then they get an abdominal ultrasound. We make sure the dogs in our care are healthy enough for surgery. Age is not a disease.
Yet every single time we post that a dog needs surgery we get questioned.
"Why would you put a senior under anesthesia?"
"Why would you neuter/spay an old dog?"
"Why put an old dog through a dental?"
We know our followers care about these dogs, but...we do too. They live with us. We interact with them everyday. We take them to the vet. We aren't willy-nilly with our medical decisions. We do our due diligence to make sure we are making the best decisions for the dogs in our care. So constantly being questioned about our decisions is very frustrating. Nothing is ever a guarantee and surgery at any age is a risk.
We are not going to put a 14 year-old dog through surgery if they cannot handle it. But, we want to make sure that the dogs in our care are not in pain or suffering with infected teeth. Have you ever had an infected tooth? It's miserable.
We know you care about the dogs and we appreciate that. But, please understand that we are doing what is best for these dogs. We care about them too.
