“Love needs no words, for it is the universal language of the heart.”

This newly orphaned baby groundhog arrived scared, thirsty, hungry, and missing her mom. As if that wasn’t enough for one little animal to endure, she’s also battling pneumonia.

It’s very rare that we hold wildlife like this, but sometimes a baby needs a little extra comfort while the healing begins. In moments like these, compassion matters.

In a world where cruelty, sickness, and unfairness can seem overwhelming, love has a way of speaking louder. And for this tiny groundhog, that love may be exactly what she needs most right now. ❤️🦫

Arlo Update:

Arlo is the Southern Flying Squirrel that came in at the beginning of April and was “rolling,” which is often a neurological symptom. However, on his exam, he actually had a broken leg! After surgery to pin his leg, he healed very well, had the pin removed, graduated to a larger cage to exercise, and now he is finally a free squirrel again! We have moved him outside and tonight his cage door will be opened for him to “choose” to leave if he wants! He has been taken back to the same location that he came from so that he can rejoin his family.

Every animal’s healing journey is a process and different from the next, and we’re honored that we were able to be a part of Arlo’s journey and give him a second chance! Be safe buddy! Love you! 💕

Update on the 2 turtles that were bound with rope and thrown in the trash at the apartment complex:
** Both turtles have eggs and should be ready to lay them any day!
** The larger turtle is very skinny and dehydrated, so she received fluids. She needs to gain some weight prior to being released.
** The smaller of the 2 had swallowed a hook — evidence that she was caught while someone was fishing, so she had surgery to remove the hook.

Both are doing well and enjoying life out of the trash can! 💗 🐢

I rarely take in raccoon kits. In fact, we have a rehabber who specializes in these little troublemakers. But this time of year, nearly everyone is full, so I leave myself open to taking a few that are already eating on their own and just need some time to grow.

That’s how I ended up with these three…

…who also brought a few thousand friends with them.

You read that right. This is yet another reason not to pick up random baby animals and bring them into your house. These guys arrived covered not only in the big, fat ticks most people are familiar with, but also tiny “seed ticks” about the size of poppy seeds. Just my luck!

So instead of getting to dinner on time, my husband and I spent the evening starting treatments and getting them settled in. The raccoons may not have appreciated our efforts, but they’ll certainly be feeling much better soon.

Wildlife rescue is rarely glamorous, but it’s never boring!

We've been busy releasing many overwintered animals now that spring is finally here to stay, including a whole crew of box turtles. One of them, Bea, came to us with a nasty respiratory infection. She recovered beautifully, and we returned her right back where she was found. 🐢 Be free Bea! We hope you have lots of babies.

Meet our sanctuary pigeons! 🕊️

Feral pigeons (rock doves) are considered an invasive species and have no federal protection. We took Jasper (far left) in last year as a baby squab after he was found being chased by cats, and sadly his parents were nowhere around. Since you can’t tell the s*x of a pigeon just by looking at them, I had Jasper DNA tested and discovered he was actually a boy! He decided to stick around on his own, so we made him a safe place to do so.

I originally planned on only having two pigeons, so I adopted Persephone from Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue as a companion for Jasper. She’s sitting second from the left.

The pigeon on the far right flew into a fire station one night and spent the evening hanging out with the firefighters before being brought to me the next morning. This one has identification bands, and we attempted to contact the owner but never received a response.

Finally, the pigeon third from the left flew into someone’s garage and refused to leave. It also has leg bands, but no identifying information. Both of these pigeons were extremely skinny and emaciated when they arrived.

Racing pigeons and pigeons released for ceremonies are incredibly vulnerable once out in the wild. Many lack survival skills, and their fancy coloring can make them easier targets for predators. While some may eventually find their way home, the fact that they often arrive exhausted and severely underweight shows how difficult survival can be for them outside of human care.

Animal cruelty is something that we see far too often, and something that I will never hesitate to report. Fortunately, a case has already been started for these 2 red eared sliders who were found discarded in a cooler at an apartment complex.

What makes this situation especially disturbing is the fact that both turtles were not only left to die inside a container, but were also bound with rope.

Humans are “supposed” to be a smarter and more superior species, but when I see things like this, it just shows how inferior we really are. To destroy the planet and destroy the very beings that help to keep our habitats healthy literally makes no sense to me.

Do better. Be a better person. Show your children how to be good people.

I plan to have these turtles X-rayed to make sure they don’t have MBD or haven’t swallowed a hook, and as long as they check out okay they should be okay to be released. Thank you so much to the people who saved them.

And to the people who did this to them….may you have the day you deserve.

Today is World Turtle Day 🐢

Turtles are some of the most important and overlooked animals in our ecosystems. They help keep wetlands and waterways balanced, and many species can live for decades — if they survive the growing challenges they face from habitat loss and traffic.

These snapping turtle and red-eared slider eggs represent hope for the next generation. Sadly, all 3 mothers were hit by vehicles while searching for places to lay their eggs, and despite our efforts, they couldn’t be saved. We were able to recover their eggs, though, and now we’ll do everything we can to give these babies a chance at life.

This time of year, turtles are constantly on the move. Please watch the roads, slow down, and help turtles cross safely in the direction they were headed when possible. Small actions truly make a difference. 💚
