Zack Miller Legacy

Today marks five years since we lost Zack Miller: a son, teammate, warrior, and larger-than-life friend whose impact continues to ripple across the world every single day.

If you knew Zack, you knew the energy he carried into every room. The jokes, the stories, the loyalty, the Southern charm, and the way he made people feel seen and welcomed no matter who they were. He lived fully, loved deeply, and served this country with extraordinary courage through seven deployments as a Navy SEAL, including multiple combat tours in Afghanistan. Even in his final fight against glioblastoma, Zack faced life the same way he always did, with strength, humor, and heart.

Five years later, his legacy is stronger than ever.

What began as heartbreak has grown into a global community determined to honor Zack by fighting the disease that took him from us far too soon. Through the work of the Zack Miller Legacy Foundation, we continue funding glioblastoma research, supporting awareness initiatives, and bringing people together through purpose, friendship, and action.

Over the next few days, friends across the country, and around the world, will complete the “ILL MILL” workout in Zack’s honor:

And Zack’s legacy continues far beyond one workout. This year alone, supporters are participating in events like the Frogman Swim in Boston this September (thank you ), the UK Field Day in London later this month, and the Annual Chili Cook-Off in Zack’s hometown: all carrying Zack’s spirit forward and helping us continue the fight against glioblastoma.

To everyone who has supported this mission over the last five years: thank you. Every donation, workout, event, prayer, and conversation matters more than you know.

Today, we remember Zack the best way possible: by celebrating the incredible life he lived, living our own lives to the fullest, and continuing the mission he inspired.

One of Zack’s missions

DEVGRU Silver Squadron operators parachuting into Northern Nigeria to rescue American citizen Philip Walton. October 31, 2020. Walton, a 27 year old American farmer and the son of missionaries, had been kidnapped five days earlier from his home in Massalata, Niger, by six armed men on motorcycles. After offering his captors $40, he was taken. They demanded nearly $1 million in ransom, and there was real fear he would be sold to al Qaeda or ISIS aligned terrorist groups operating in the region. The U.S. moved fast. The CIA tracked Walton’s location using sophisticated cell phone surveillance. Marine Special Operations elements in Africa helped pinpoint him. And then, early on October 31, around 30 operators from SEAL Team Six’s Silver Squadron parachuted out of Air Force MC-130J Commando II aircraft, moved three miles on foot to the target, and hit the compound in the dark. After a brief and intense firefight, six of the seven captors were killed. Walton was rescued without injury. No American was wounded. In the words of one counterterrorism official: “They were all dead before they knew what happened.” This is what over two decades of Global War on Terror honing produced.

No man left behind!!! Congratulations on an unprecedented rescue mission ! Job well done ! 🇺🇸👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻

Senior military leaders described the mission to recover the downed airman as “one of the most challenging and complex in the history of U.S. Special Operations” — a reflection of the brutal terrain, the severity of his injuries, and the constant pressure from Iranian forces racing toward his position deep in the mountains of southern Iran.

For more than 24 hours, the Weapon Systems Officer defied the odds. He evaded enemy patrols, fought through exhaustion, and at one point clawed his way up a 7,000-foot ridgeline through sheer determination alone. He refused to be captured.

Above him, U.S. attack aircraft unleashed relentless firepower, striking Iranian convoys and buying precious time for the rescue forces moving in on the ground.

They were coming.

Operators from SEAL Team Six, backed by the full force of JSOC, closed in on their man. Weapons ready, positions secured, they held Iranian forces at bay with precision, discipline, and the cold resolve of the world’s most elite warriors.

No one was left behind. The mission was accomplished.
