In the run-up to this year’s Dakota Lakota Summer Institute/Summer Indigenous Language Institute at United Tribes Technical College, we will be posting spotlights on our instructors!
Let’s welcome one of our returning instructors, Dusty Nelson!

👋🏽 Dusty was born and raised in Pine Ridge and is enrolled as Oglala. She is currently residing in Dakota country.

✨ She has been teaching Lakota Language and in Cultural Immersion since 2011. She has taught students all all ages across three states. Her learning journey began at the feet of her grandmothers and continued throughout her life in many spaces such as the classroom, the community, and tribal colleges.

🔥 Dusty has been attending DLSI and SILI for over 10 years and she continues to study daily and improve her Dakota language.

💥 Dusty will be teaching the Lakota Speaking Lab and the Dakota Speaking Lab this year at DLSI/SILI!

Let’s welcome Adele Subola!

👋 Adele was born and raised in Minneapolis and is from Standing Rock.

🌟 She began her language journey at DLSI back in 2017 and has been learning ever since. She learned at the Minneapolis American Indian Center and their community classes before studying at the University of MN Twin Cities campus. She would always come back every Summer for DLSI when she could and continued learning in Minnesota when she couldn’t.

⚡️ Adele completed her first year of teaching Dakota at Osseo Area Schools and is happy to be back at DLSI as an instructor!

🔥 Adele will be co-teaching Dakota Language I and Dakota/Lakota Language II this year at DLSI/SILI!

Let’s welcome Nichole Subola!

👋 Nichole is Húŋkpapȟa, Oglála, and Iháŋkthuŋwaŋ and enrolled at Standing Rock.

🌹 She began learning Lakota at DLSI in 2017 and has returned most years. In 2018, she began taking Dakota language classes at the University of Minnesota. And then began working with Dakhód’iapi Okhódakičhiye, a Minnesota Dakota language non-profit. She assists with projects and coordinates Dakota language camps in the Twin Cities community.

🌼 She’s happy to be back at DLSI this year,
as an instructor!

Let’s welcome Aiyana Noisyhawk-Goodsell, a first year teacher!

🌸 Aiyana grew up hearing Dakota/Lakota spoken by her Unci and Kaka. Building on that foundation, she has been actively learning Lakota for the past two years. This will be her first year at DLSI/SILI!

💐 She recently graduated from United Tribes Technical College, a member of the class of 2026! She plans to continue her educational journey.

🌺 Aiyana is Oglala Lakota on her mother’s side and Sisitunwan Wahpetunwan Dakota on her father’s side.

🌻 Aiyana will be co-teaching Dakota Language I and the Dakota Speaking Lab this year at DLSI/SILI!

☀️ Ellie Borah has been learning Lakota for ten years. This will be her 6th year at DLSI and SILI and her first year as an instructor!

✨ She recently graduated high school, a member of the class of 2026! She plans to study Elementary Education and Native American Studies at the University of Minnesota Morris this fall!

💥 Ellie will be co-teaching Lakota Language I and the Lakota Speaking Lab this year at DLSI/SILI @ UTTC as well as “Lakota Introductions” at DLSI @ SBC!
