Honoring a Life of Service 🖤❤️💙

The Fort Worth Police Pipes & Drums were deeply honored to stand alongside Odessa Fire Rescue and members of multiple public safety agencies as we paid our final respects to Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Handlin.

Days like this remind us that while our uniforms, badges, and roles may be different, the bond between police and fire runs deep. When one of our brothers or sisters is lost, we come together as one public safety family—to stand beside one another, to honor their service, and to make sure their family and department know they do not grieve alone.

We are especially grateful for the opportunity to play alongside Odessa Fire Rescue Pipes & Drums and fellow pipers and drummers from agencies across the region. There is something incredibly powerful about many departments coming together with one purpose: to honor a life of service.
Our thoughts remain with the Handlin family, Odessa Fire Rescue, and all who knew and loved Eric.

Rest easy, Firefighter/Paramedic Handlin. Your service is complete. We’ll take it from here.

Today, we pause to honor and remember Corporal Garrett W. Hull, who made the ultimate sacrifice eight years ago while protecting the citizens of Fort Worth.

We remember not only the officer and hero who gave his life, but the husband, father, friend, and brother in blue whose absence continues to be felt by so many.

The Fort Worth Police Pipes & Drums is honored to help carry forward the memory of our fallen. Today, our thoughts are with Corporal Hull’s family, friends, and fellow officers.

Eight years later, we still remember. We always will.

Corporal Garrett Hull and other members of the Criminal Intelligence Unit had been conducting surveillance of three suspects, who had been involved in more than 15 armed robberies in which three people were shot. Shortly after midnight on September 14, 2018, the suspects entered a bar and robbed the 10 patrons at gunpoint. As the suspects fled from the building the officers attempted to take them into custody. During a foot pursuit, one of the men opened fire, striking Corporal Hull in the head. Corporal Hull succumbed to his wounds. He was 40 years old.

🇺🇸 WHEN THE PIPES PLAY, WE REMEMBER 🇺🇸

On September 11, 2001, our nation witnessed unimaginable loss—and extraordinary courage.

Nearly 3,000 lives were taken that day, including 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority Police officers who answered the call and ran toward danger.

For those of us who wear a uniform, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a reminder of the oath to serve, the courage to answer when called, and the sacrifices made by those who may never return home.

And for those of us who carry the pipes and drums, remembrance has a sound.

The pipes have long accompanied our fallen heroes to their final rest. Their music speaks when words simply aren't enough. Each note carries honor, sorrow, gratitude, and a promise:

You are remembered.
Your service mattered.
Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the first responders who climbed the stairs while others came down. We remember the dispatchers, military members, healthcare workers, volunteers, and ordinary citizens who showed extraordinary courage. We remember those who survived and those who later lost their lives to illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero.

Today, the Fort Worth Police Pipes & Drums remembers them all.

And when the pipes play, we play for them.

Our hearts are with Odessa Fire Rescue as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

The Fort Worth Police Pipes & Drums extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, fellow firefighters, and loved ones of Firefighter Eric Handlin, who passed away following a serious head injury.

We stand beside our brothers and sisters of Odessa Fire Rescue during this difficult time. May his family and fire service family find strength and comfort in the days ahead.

Rest easy, Firefighter Handlin. We’ll take it from here. 🖤❤️🖤

The badge carries a burden few will ever understand. Today, Texas DPS Trooper Sergio Romero was killed in a vehicle accident in the line of duty. May we never forget his service, courage, and dedication. Please remember his family, friends and law enforcement brothers and sisters.

Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, the members of the Fort Worth Police Pipes & Drums stand in our Nation’s Capital to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

As we gather in Washington, D.C., we remember not only the fallen, but also the families, friends, and fellow officers who carry their memory forward each and every day. Their courage, dedication, and selfless commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

It is a humbling privilege to represent the City of Fort Worth and our department during National Police Week as we join agencies from across the country in remembrance and reflection.

May we always honor the legacy of our fallen heroes by continuing to serve with pride, integrity, and compassion.

Gone, but never forgotten.
