THE 2026 CANTEY LECTURE & PRESERVATION AWARDS

Join Historic Fort Worth, Inc. for an evening celebrating the people, places, and ideas that help preserve Fort Worth’s distinct historic identity.

This year’s Cantey Lecture, “Effective Preservation in Challenging Times,” features Bradford C. Patterson, Chief Preservation Officer of the Texas Historical Commission. Patterson will explore the opportunities and challenges facing historic preservation today—bringing Samuel Benton Cantey III’s enduring vision for preservation into the present.

Following the lecture, Historic Fort Worth will present the 2026 Preservation Awards, recognizing outstanding achievements in preservation projects, stewardship, and leadership.

The Section 106 review of the proposed Triumphal Arch near Arlington National Cemetery was terminated this week, and the public has only until 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 29 to comment.

The National Park Service acknowledged the 250-foot monument would adversely affect dozens of historic properties. Alternatives, like a different site, or smaller structure, or different design, were never seriously evaluated.

A HARD FAREWELL TO THE FLYING SAUCER

Over the weekend, the Fort Worth Convention Center’s iconic “Flying Saucer” held its final event before demolition begins to make way for a new state-of-the-art convention center.

For many, the event felt like a celebration of life for a building that has been such a recognizable part of Fort Worth. But for historians and supporters of Historic Fort Worth who have worked tirelessly to preserve the Convention Center, it was also a difficult moment—a hard pill to swallow after fighting so hard to save it.

We know that we can’t save them all. But this was certainly one of the hardest losses.

And still, the work continues.

Historic Fort Worth will turn its attention to the endangered places that remain and celebrate the preservation successes we’ve achieved together over the years. Every building saved is a reminder that preservation matters—and that the fight is worth continuing.

The Flying Saucer may be coming down. But the fight to preserve Fort Worth’s history continues.
