As many of your know I am not just the executive director of Literacy United, I am also a special needs/autism mom. Part of this journey that neurotypical folks may not know is how hard…insanely hard…it is to successfully send your kid anywhere and feel safe, get a break, go on a dinner date with your partner, do anything really - schools, camps, Sunday school, a play date or even hiring a babysitter are often impossible.

First, I would say 70% of the time these people/places won’t even take your kid when you divulge the diagnosis. That’s right folks - even places professing full inclusion/all are welcome etc. Then if they do take your kid, you worry that you are going to get “THE CALL”. When Clara was in public school in 1st and 2nd grade my stomach would clench into a ball when the phone rang. It was never good news and usually involved me racing to school to get a dysregulated child (no shade on her school they did their very best it was just not the environment for her!).

This summer we decided to do something about this. We recently remodeled and expanded our clinic and we finally had space to make this dream come true so we started camp Rise and Read It was SO MUCH FUN.
1. We didn’t turn any kids away and we worked through difficulties
2. We allowed 1-1 aides and personal care attendants.
3. We had a calm down room with nothing in it - just a safe room in case a melt down was coming and a child needed a safe space
4. We had a 1-2 adult to child ratio (camp capped at 20 kids)
5. We accommodated by knowing our kids before they walked through the door.
6. We provided financial aide for special needs families who are overstressed because it costs 2x as much to raise a special needs kid
7. We blended literacy with arts and crafts and games!
8. Really - it’s true - all kids are welcome!

We can’t wait to Rise and Read again. Sign ups and dates to come soon!

This camp was my happy place this summer! So proud we have built this new safe space for all children and provide much needed respite for some of the most amazing parents I’ve ever met.
