𝐏𝐂𝐎𝐒 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐌𝐎𝐒.

After a global consensus process led by 56 academic, clinical, and patient organizations — published May 12, 2026 in The Lancet — polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) will now be known as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).

“[PCOS] is inaccurate and misleading, obscuring the condition’s multisystem endocrine and metabolic features, reinforcing stigma, delaying diagnosis, and hindering effective clinical care, research, and policy alignment,” for the 170 million women affected globally, published The Lancet Group.

Up to 70% of people with the condition are undiagnosed for what is actually 𝙖 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡-𝙗𝙤𝙙𝙮, 𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞-𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

Karen Tang, MD, MPH commented, “It’s in the family of diabetes. Diabetes gets so much funding and research and innovations every year, PCOS gets virtually nothing. So, maybe people will take it more seriously if they don’t think of it as just a lady disease.”

♾️ 85% of people with PCOS, now PMOS, have insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes

♾️ BMI is higher in these patients and contributes to severity, but lean women (BMI ≤25 kg/m2) can have PMOS

♾️ PMOS presents with metabolic, cardiovascular, reproductive, psychological, and even dermatological features

Diagnosis still requires two of three criteria: ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism (high testosterone, acne, hirsutism), and polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound.

Marydonna Ravasio, DO, MS, FACOOG (Dist) has had a one-of-a-kind path to OBGYN — from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to active duty US Army OB to global health missions in Kenya and Ghana.

In this episode, she joins Rupesh Patel on the Women’s Health Minutes podcast to reflect on what military service taught her about resourcefulness, why she went back for robotics training a decade into practice, and what keeps her passionate about teaching the next generation of physicians.

She even reflects on a unique experience as past ACOOG president, when her tenure fell during the COVID pandemic.

This week is National Infertility Awareness Week, with the theme, . It reminds us that every person navigating infertility is more than a diagnosis and more than a journey.

For osteopathic physicians, that framing isn't new, it's the entire foundation of practice.

The first tenet of osteopathic medicine states that "the body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind and spirit." Applied to infertility care, that means looking beyond a single organ system and considering the patient's entire interconnected story.

A few realities worth considering this week, as they represent the very people NIAW advocates for:

→ 1 in 6 people globally experience infertility in their lifetime (WHO, 2023)

→ Male factor contributes to 40–50% of cases in heterosexual couples (ACOG)

→ Depression prevalence among women experiencing infertility ranges from 28% in high-income countries to 44% in low- and middle-income countries (Kiani et al., 2021)

→ Infertility has been formally classified as a disease by the WHO and AMA since 2009

And a few realities that give us hope:

→ IVF births in the U.S. surpassed 100,000 in 2024 — a milestone that reflects both growing demand and improving care (SART)

→ 1 in 38 babies born in the US in 2023 was an IVF baby.
