Howdy from Austin!

Guardianship Services, Inc. had the special opportunity to attend the Texas House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence hearing at the Texas Capitol, where our CEO, Lyn Scott, provided testimony regarding the growing crisis of fraud and financial exploitation impacting older and vulnerable Texans across our state.

During her testimony, Lyn shared a powerful victim testimonial that included the statement: “She was told her account was being used for illicit purposes.” While simple on the surface, those words reflect something much deeper — the fear, confusion, isolation, and devastating financial loss experienced by countless older adults who become victims of exploitation.

As fraud tactics continue to evolve, Texas communities are seeing increasingly sophisticated scams involving cryptocurrency kiosks, fake government impersonations, deceptive financing agreements, AI-enabled fraud, phishing schemes, and other high-pressure tactics specifically targeting older adults and vulnerable populations.

These crimes extend far beyond financial loss. They impact health, independence, trust, and overall community well-being.

We are grateful to the committee members for their thoughtful questions and willingness to examine opportunities for stronger prevention, investigation, prosecution, restitution, and victim recovery efforts.

Meaningful change will require continued collaboration between financial institutions, law enforcement, prosecutors, Adult Protective Services, healthcare systems, policymakers, and community organizations working together across Texas.

At Guardianship Services, Inc., we remain deeply committed to advancing elder justice efforts, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring older and at-risk adults are protected, supported, and empowered.
