AAPL was thrilled to have Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon sit down with former AAPL President David Cape for a fascinating fireside chat at our 2026 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City.

Attendees enjoyed learning about current issues Gordon is facing, including what makes Wyoming energy development unique, fallout from the โ€œBig Beautiful Bill,โ€ how Wyoming is increasing their already impressive energy production, how advancements in renewables are impacting his state and so much more.

Several student members from the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources were able to chat with Gov. Gordon before the session, and several land professionals were able to directly ask follow-up questions with Gordon after the session.

Gov. Gordon is a strong industry ally and supporter of AAPL and NAPE Expo LP, and we always love connecting with him in person at our live events. Thank you, Gov. As of this post, we are currently tracking a whopping 1,283 total bills, which beats last yearโ€™s final number of 1,010 and sets a new record for AAPL!

These important updates as well as recent legislative victories have made this year a landmark year for our advocacy efforts. As the land professionโ€™s advocate, itโ€™s AAPLโ€™s job to inform members of breaking news and timely analysis of emerging legislative, regulatory, judicial and tax matters that affect land professionals.

This weekโ€™s Southwest Land Institute was a home run event that featured first-class education, fun networking, a record-breaking crowd and Americaโ€™s pastime in the heart of DFW.

After expanding capacity with a new conference space for this year's institute, a record number of landmen were able able to unite and earn AAPL CEUs as well as CLEs from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico. SWLIโ€™s stacked education lineup covered hot topics like royalties, day rates, case law updates, the energy transition, JOAs and more.

Refreshing breaks and a networking reception following education offered excellent views of the new and old Texas Rangers' ballparks as well as AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. After the full day of education and networking, attendees caught the Texas Rangers host the San Francisco Giants.

AAPL leadership and accredited university program representatives gathered last week in Fort Worth for the 2026-27 Landman Scholarship Trust Annual Meeting. We love getting to hear directly from directors of our accredited programs as they play such a vital role in developing the next generation of landmen. Thanks to all who were able to take part in this time of healthy discussion, planning and networking.

The LST awards up to $250,000 annually to qualified and deserving undergraduate and graduate students from the colleges or universities that offer an active and accredited curriculum in natural resources management or similar studies who wish to further their training in professional landwork, natural resources management or associated occupations. Individual scholarships to students can extend up to $5,000 per scholarship.
