About the Audition

Audition Appointment and requirements.
1) To schedule an audition appointment, email us at [email protected]. Include your contact information in the initial email. If you have many conflicts (December 1 – March 7th), feel free to list them in your initial email, though you will still be required to write them on the audition form at the audition.
2) No monologue required! Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
3) Optional: Join the SSG Auditions Facebook Group for updates, sides, and learn when all roles have been cast.
4) Bring a copy of your headshot and resume to the audition.
5) Video Auditions: While we accept video submissions for those unable to attend in person, attending the live audition is highly recommended.

Non-Equity Actor Compensation
Performing in The Imaginary Invalid: $60.00 Stipend
Performing in Les Liaisons Dangereuses: $60.00 Stipend
SSG Actor Ensemble Members (those who have performed in at least 10 SSG productions) will receive:
• $30 bonus if performing in one production
• $60 bonus if performing in both productions
Two complimentary tickets for the first weekend of the festival.
Actors’ pass for opening weekends of future shows (valid for one year).
Note: Unfortunately, we are unable to provide Equity contracts currently.
Important Notes
- Refer to character listing for mature content warnings if auditioning for these shows.
- If made an offer for both shows, you must accept both roles as a package. Otherwise offer will be withdrawn.
- Rehearsals and castings prioritize safety and inclusivity. Bullying and derogatory comments regarding race, religion, culture, gender, or identity will not be tolerated. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds to audition.
- Participation in strike (post-production teardown) is mandatory to receive stipends and be in the shows. May also need to have you participate in one set construction day.
- Rehearsal schedules are tailored to actor conflicts. Be thorough and honest about conflicts from December 1 to March 7, 2027
Casting Details:
- Please have your decision ready when we call; a simple "yes" or "no" is sufficient.
- Avoid delays, such as needing to check schedules or consult others, as it slows the process. This should be done before you audition.
- If not cast, updates will be posted in the SSG Auditions Facebook Group. We do not make individual calls.
About the Shows
The Imaginary Invalid By Molière
Convinced he is constantly ill, wealthy Argan surrounds himself with doctors, remedies, and outrageous medical bills and plans to marry his daughter to a doctor to secure free treatment. But his family has other ideas. Molière’s hilarious satire of medicine, money, and human foolishness remains as delightfully absurd today as when it first took the stage. (PG)

In the decadent world of pre-Revolutionary France, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont turn seduction into a dangerous game of revenge and manipulation. But when desire becomes real, their carefully constructed schemes begin to unravel. Christopher Hampton’s provocative drama is a gripping exploration of s*x, power, betrayal, and the devastating consequences of treating love as a game.
Content note: The play contains mature s*xual themes, manipulation, s*xual coercion, and violence.

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Set in aristocratic France in the 1780s, Les Liaisons Dangereuses explores seduction, ambition, revenge, and the dangerous consequences of treating love as a game.
***Age ranges indicate suggested playing ages, rather than an actor’s actual age.
***We will not be casting anyone under the age of 18 for this production.
*** Les Liaisons Dangereuses contains mature s*xual content, including scenes of s*xual coercion. Certain roles require onstage kissing, choreographed intimate contact, and the portrayal of s*xual situations. Valmont and Danceny require choreographed sword combat.
*** All intimate contact and stage combat will be choreographed and rehearsed.
*** No nudity is required. All intimate scenes will be presented in a tasteful, stylized manner consistent with Stolen Shakespeare Guild’s classical approach.
La Marquise de Merteuil — Female, 30–50
An elegant, intelligent widow who carefully guards her respectable public image while manipulating those around her. Witty, commanding, and fiercely independent, she uses seduction and social influence to pursue power and revenge. Requires sharp comic timing and emotional depth.
Le Vicomte de Valmont — Male, 25–50
A charismatic aristocrat and notorious seducer. Charming, calculating, and accustomed to getting his way, he treats romantic conquest as sport. His pursuit of Madame de Tourvel challenges his carefully cultivated detachment. Requires confidence, wit, and emotional range.
La Présidente de Tourvel — Female, 25–40
A married woman whose religious faith and moral convictions shape her life. Sincere, compassionate, and principled, she struggles with her growing attraction to Valmont. Requires emotional openness and the ability to convey a powerful conflict between duty and desire.
Cécile Volanges — Female, playing late teens
A sheltered young woman recently returned from convent schooling and preparing for an arranged marriage. Curious, impressionable, and inexperienced, she becomes entangled in the schemes of Merteuil and Valmont while falling in love with Danceny.
Le Chevalier Danceny — Male, 18–25
Cécile’s music teacher and young romantic attachment. Earnest, idealistic, and passionate, he initially lacks the sophistication to recognize the manipulation surrounding him. Requires youthful sincerity and the ability to develop greater intensity as the story progresses.
Madame de Volanges — Female, 40–60
Cécile’s mother. Proper, protective, and concerned with reputation and a suitable marriage for her daughter. Her confidence in social convention leaves her unaware of some of the dangers closest to home.
Madame de Rosemonde — Female, 60+
Valmont’s elderly aunt. Gracious, perceptive, and compassionate, she offers hospitality and becomes a trusted confidante to Tourvel. Brings warmth, dignity, and an understanding of human frailty.
Émilie — Female, 20–40
A courtesan involved with Valmont. Confident, playful, and worldly, she is comfortable with the transactional nature of their relationship. Requires a strong presence and a sense of humor.
Azolan — Male, 20–45
Valmont’s resourceful valet. Observant and practical, he assists his employer by gathering information and facilitating his schemes. Requires alertness, discretion, and comic timing.
Major-Domo — Male, adult; flexible playing age
A servant in Merteuil’s household who announces visitors and attends to household duties. A smaller role requiring poise, precision, and a formal manner.

Argan — Male, 40 and up
A wealthy hypochondriac convinced that he is seriously ill. Demanding, gullible, and obsessed with doctors and treatments, he allows his imagined ailments to govern his household. Beneath his bluster is a vulnerable man who wants reassurance and affection. Requires strong comic timing and physical comedy skills.
Toinette — Female, 25 and up (Any Age)
Argan’s outspoken, quick-witted servant and Angélique’s ally. Practical, resourceful, and unafraid to challenge her employer, she uses disguises and clever schemes to reveal the truth. Requires sharp comic timing, confidence, and versatility.
Béline — Female, 30 and up
Argan’s second wife. She presents herself as a devoted, affectionate caregiver while pursuing her own financial interests. Skilled at flattery and manipulation, she conceals her selfish intentions beneath exaggerated concern. Requires charm and the ability to shift between sweetness and calculating ambition.
Angélique — Female, 20–30
Argan’s elder daughter, who loves Cléante but is being pressured to marry Thomas Diafoirus. Sincere, affectionate, and determined, she struggles to honor her father while defending her own future. Requires warmth, youthful energy, and emotional sincerity.
Cléante — Male, 20–30
Angélique’s romantic, devoted suitor. Willing to improvise and disguise himself to gain access to her, he must navigate her father’s demands and an unwelcome rival. Requires charm, comic timing, and a believable romantic connection with Angélique.
Béralde — Male or Female, 30 and up
Argan’s sensible brother. Calm, observant, and skeptical of the medical establishment, he attempts to reason with Argan and help him recognize the deception around him. Requires wit, warmth, and a grounded presence amid the chaos.
Louison — Female, playing approximately 18 - 25
Argan’s younger daughter. Playful, affectionate, and quick-thinking, she uses her own theatrical instincts to escape her father’s anger. A smaller role with a memorable comic scene requiring confidence and expressive reactions.
Monsieur Diafoirus — Male, 45–65
A pompous physician and Thomas’s proud father. He enthusiastically promotes his son’s accomplishments while remaining oblivious to the young man’s awkwardness. Requires an authoritative manner, comic precision, and confidence with elaborate speeches.
Thomas Diafoirus — Male, 20–30
A young doctor selected by Argan to marry Angélique. Stiff, awkward, and thoroughly rehearsed, he approaches courtship like an academic examination. Requires strong physical characterization and the ability to deliver absurdly formal speeches with complete sincerity.
Monsieur Purgon — Male, 40–65
Argan’s domineering physician. Utterly certain of his own authority, he reacts dramatically when his prescribed treatment is questioned. A smaller role requiring commanding energy and an escalating comic temper.
Monsieur Fleurant — Male or Female, 30–60
Argan’s apothecary, responsible for administering his prescribed treatments. Businesslike, self-important, and easily offended when his services are refused. A smaller comic role requiring a strong presence and precise timing.
Monsieur de Bonnefoi — Male, 35–65
A notary who assists Béline with arrangements concerning Argan’s estate. Smooth, professional, and ethically flexible, he gives questionable advice with reassuring confidence. A smaller role requiring polished delivery and understated comic timing.
