Meet Captain Alice Novatnak, a member of the APA Negotiating Committee. Alice brings firsthand negotiating experience to the team, having previously served as Chair of the Piedmont MEC Negotiating Committee.

Elected to the APA Negotiating Committee in 2025, she is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with advanced negotiating and executive training from Cornell, Harvard, and ALPA. Alice combines leadership experience, industry knowledge, and specialized training to help represent the interests of American Airlines pilots at the bargaining table.

The first member of the Negotiating Committee featured in our “Meet the Negotiators” series is CA Bradley “BJ” West. A former Chair of the APA Contract Compliance Committee, he joined the Negotiating Committee during the final stages of talks for the 2023 agreement. “The pool of talent to lead airlines seems to be relatively small” APA President CA Nick Silva told The Dallas Morning News. “It’s just the question of, is there somebody out there who can turn the ship around faster? We have hope that there’s somebody out there who sees the potential here, who sees what we see, and is able to come in.”

The leaders of the Allied Pilots Association have not let their frustrations go by the wayside as American Airlines continues to lag United and Delta in profitability.

CA Scott Gahs and FO Robert Aycoth represented APA during an anniversary ceremony at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. CA Gahs and a New York Police Department officer presented a wreath for Flight 11, and his wife, American Airlines flight attendant Susan Gahs, presented a wreath for Flight 77 along with a Pentagon police officer. After the ceremony, the APA wreath was placed alongside wreaths from the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA).

APA President CA Nick Silva and APA Secretary-Treasurer CA Philip Johnson were among a group of pilots who visited New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Squad 18 on Sept. 10, when they presented a case to display a firefighter’s helmet. The APA contingent also included LGA Domicile Chair CA Mark Lokey and LGA Domicile Vice Chair CA Jim Scanlan, as well as two of their predecessors on the APA Board of Directors, CA R Scott Heckenberger and CA Mike Burr. CA Burr is holding the same U.S. flag that a team of volunteer runners carried between Boston and Los Angeles in the fall of 2001 as a demonstration of American resolve.

APA Vice President CA Chris Torres, BOS Domicile Chair CA Lawrence Cutler, and BOS Domicile Chair CA Thomas Knox were among the pilots who participated in a Sept. 11 anniversary ceremony at Boston Logan International Airport. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 both departed from BOS.
