Good morning, Eastsiders! Our new website is live, complete with an option under "How to Give Help" to become a recurring donor.

Why give monthly? In addition to taking the most effective step against hunger in our community, you'll also join the "I'm an Eastsider" club, complete with cool swag like tote bags, t-shirts, and yard signs that let everyone know you are proud to be an Eastsider (either in location, or in your heart)!

I thought I'd share some about seniors and hunger today, as this is a significant challenge area that is difficult to address.

In "Access to Assistance for Food-Insecure Seniors," Marie C. Gaultieri noted many challenges seniors face in getting adequate nutrition, from mobility issues to lack of funds due to social security benefit freezes. Many of us have heard that seniors often have to choose between medications and food, especially at the end of the month between checks, but Gaultieri notes, "Some researchers argue that owing to the combined factors of the natural aging process and food insecurity, seniors experience psychosocial effects from malnutrition that are similar to symptoms of Alzheimer's and other illnesses (Auslander and White 2009). Therefore, doctors can misdiagnose patients with diseases and medicate them when what they really need is proper nourishment." As a result, misdiagnosed seniors would be making a choice between medications that may not be needed and food that truly is.
