For more than 60 years, Head Start has helped children build a strong foundation for learning while giving families access to the support they need to thrive.
In a new NPR story, Carol Klocek, CEO of Center for Transforming Lives, shares concerns about proposed federal changes to Head Start and what they could mean for children experiencing homelessness and other families facing barriers to opportunity. The story also features parent Tanisha Thomas, who shares how Head Start helped create new possibilities for her family.
At Center for Transforming Lives, we see the impact of Head Start every day. Beyond preparing children for success in school, the program connects families with support and opportunities that can change the trajectory of a child's life. In fact, the National Bureau of Economic Research finds Head Start participants are more likely to:
· Graduate from high school
· Attend college
· Receive an advanced degree
And they’re less likely to experience poverty as adults.
The impact is especially great for homeless children, which account for one in four children served through our early childhood education programs. For families navigating housing instability, access to high-quality early childhood education can make all the difference.
