Known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," this activist and educator led decades-long efforts (including symbolic walks) to make it a federal holiday, and succeeded in 2021.

Today we salute Frederick Douglass! Prominent abolitionist and orator, whose legacy is deeply tied to the emancipation celebration, had a statue of him unveiled in the U.S. Capitol on Juneteenth in 2013.

The Union commander who issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, announced the freedom of enslaved people in Texas marking the origin of Juneteenth.
