Matai arrived at the Leadership Academy of South Sudan carrying uncertainty about her future and whether she would ever have the opportunity to continue her education. Through LASS's Leadership and Discipleship program, she discovered renewed hope, a deeper relationship with God, and a clear sense of purpose. What began as a chance to return to school became a life-changing journey of faith. Matai is pursuing her future with confidence and a desire to help others experience the same hope she has found at LASS.

1 Timothy 4:12 – "Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity."

4africa is guided by this verse as our programs are dedicated to unlocking the God-given potential in men and women ages 16-24 from South Sudan starting at LASS. We invest in and empower these bright, young minds who go on to become incredible leaders, business owners, politicians, and church planters–ultimately making a significant impact in their community. Our alumni are creative entrepreneurs, serving in major leadership roles at their university, developing new software and medical devices, UN delegates, leading discipleship trainings, and so much more. There's no limit to what God can do through these inspirational, young leaders!

Meet Acol Achiek Ajak 🌟

Acol came to the academy with a quiet faith and a small circle. She didn’t know what it looked like to fully live out her beliefs or how to connect with people from different tribes and backgrounds. Through discipleship and care groups at LASS, she’s discovering what it means to trust God deeply, to build meaningful relationships across differences, and to walk with a true sense of purpose.

Stories like Acol’s don’t happen overnight, but they are exactly what your support makes possible. Her journey is still unfolding, but the transformation is already clear.

We’re excited to welcome three new team members who will help strengthen both leadership development and academics at LASS, as well as alumni engagement!

Arkangeilo Odradri, one of our very own graduates of the Leadership Academy of South Sudan, is returning to serve as our new Leadership & Discipleship Coordinator. After earning his business degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, Arkangeilo felt called to give back to the community that shaped him—an incredible example of the leadership pipeline in action.

We also welcome Weere Bernard as our new Department Head of Science. A graduate of Muni University with a decade of teaching experience, he brings strong expertise in Uganda’s competence-based curriculum and will help strengthen science education for our students.

Lastly, we're thrilled to share that Peter Abala, a LASS graduate from the Class of 2017 has been selected for the role of Alumni Engagement Officer. As an alumnus, Peter brings a deep understanding of the mission and a passion for strengthening our growing alumni network.

We’re grateful to have them on the 4africa staff!

Orphaned at a young age and forced to survive on the streets, Luka’s early life was marked by loss, uncertainty, and unimaginable hardship. For years, he and his younger brother did whatever they could to survive. Yet even in the darkest moments, he held onto one dream: to go to school.

Today, that dream is becoming reality at the Leadership Academy of South Sudan. Luka is a powerful example of what happens when resilience meets opportunity. He is becoming a leader determined to not only change his own future, but to uplift others around him.

LEAD Network Innovation Incubatorđź’ˇ

A new 12-week innovation incubator for our alumni began in March and will finish in June—equipping three standout hackathon teams to develop real, user-centered solutions for communities across Northern Uganda.

💭 Phase 1 focused on deep problem validation. During this stage, teams conducted an impressive 113 interviews with farmers and value chain actors to truly understand the challenges on the ground. 📊 The result? Clear, evidence-based problem statements, root cause analyses, and multiple solution concepts for each team. This phase culminated in a two-day, in-person workshop in Gulu, where ideas were sharpened and refined through collaboration and mentorship.

➡️ Phase 2: Solution Exploration. Teams are actively testing their ideas with users, narrowing in on their strongest concepts, and beginning early business modeling.

Entrepreneurship and problem-solving are core pillars of our program. With your continued investment, we are forming job creators and thought leaders who will serve their communities well.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—and it’s a meaningful reminder of how important it is to care for the whole person, not just academically, but emotionally and spiritually too.

At 4africa, we’re committed to walking alongside our students and alumni in every season. That’s why we’ve partnered with trained counselors to provide support across our network, and why our teachers have gone through intensive trauma awareness training—so they’re equipped to recognize, respond to, and care for students in a deeper way.

We’re continuing to show up in real, practical ways. Through our Trauma and Adversity Intervention Program, alumni across several universities in addition to students at LASS receive personalized teletherapy sessions—helping them navigate academic pressure, emotional stress, and personal challenges with stronger coping tools and resilience.

We also stayed connected through six follow-up calls with psychosocial clients. These simple but meaningful check-ins help us spot needs early, provide timely support, and remind each student: you’re not alone in this.
Because investing in leaders means caring for their whole story—and their wellbeing every step of the way.
