I have a favorite shirt I wear during election season. It says, "Make Good Things Happen. Vote." Some of you probably have the same shirt.
Back in 2018, a group of scrappy candidates who asked nobody's permission to run met out on the campaign trail and built a bond that's lasted ever since. One of those scrappy candidates was my good friend, Beth Llewellyn McLaughlin.
Beth is the one who came up with that shirt. Her name is not on it because she didn't want to distract from the message behind it. Just a simple statement meant to encourage our fellow Texans to vote.
That's Beth.
Some people seem to think that after closing the gap against Craig Goldman, she stepped back and disappeared. That could not be further from the truth.
She was one of the founding board members of Tarrant Together. She wrote many of the emails you have read from our organization. She has also mentored candidates who came after her because she believes in building something bigger than herself.
In recent years, she even rolled up her sleeves and joined Texans Defending Democracy because she believed in the nonpartisan mission of educating voters and pushing back against misinformation.
Maybe it is her experience in a profession that makes every other profession possible that some people misunderstand. Maybe that is why some have dismissed her work as a limited skill set.
I'm going to get a little petty for a minute. Being an educator is not a limited skill set. It is leadership. It is communication. It is problem solving. It is service. And Beth has spent years putting those skills to work for other people.
That’s why I wrote this long ass post. I believe in Beth, and I’m asking those of you in HD 97 to cast your ballot in today’s runoff for a candidate I know can not only win in November, but also make a real difference in the lives of Texans.
Get out there and make good things happen. Vote. 🤟
