Retired FWPD Sergeant Kevin Foster has authored another book on the history of Fort Worth and its police and criminals. The book is "Cops and Killers in Panther City -The Forgotten Stories".

From smoky saloons to shadowy back alleys, these chapters trace the evolution of law enforcement as it grappled with the shifting tides of justice and public order. The book brings to life the notorious criminals who haunted the city's streets and the law officers who pursued them—sometimes at great personal risk and with consequences that reverberated far beyond the headlines of their day. Readers will discover how shifting social mores, political intrigue, and the rise of organized crime all left their mark on Fort Worth’s unique brand of justice, weaving together a tapestry of triumphs, tragedies, and the enduring spirit of those sworn to uphold the law.
Cops and Killers in Panther City is a must read for fans of Fort Worth history!

Eighteen years ago today, the Fort Worth Police Department, Texas lost a great officer, Officer Dwayne Freeto #3573, who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting his community. As we think about Officer Dwayne Freeto today think about the officers who have lost their lives. Always remember behind the badge, behind the uniform, and behind the criticism, there is a human being trying to do the best they can to protect their fellow citizens and sometimes that means sacrificing their life.

We shall never forget Officer Dwayne Freeto’s energy, commitment and dedication to the citizens of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Police Department.

Gone, but never forgotten!

GUARDING OSWALD'S GRAVE

On this day, 61 years ago, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Two days later, the accused assassin himself was shot to death.

The nation and world mourned Kennedy and Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit, killed by the same man, Lee Harvey Oswald. Few mourned or cared about what happened to Oswald’s body.

But he needed to be buried, and his small family protected. Both tasks fell to the U.S. Secret Service who drafted local officers to assist.

Oswald was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth, where his mother already owned a plot. Distraught or unhinged, his mother told agents she didn’t understand why her son wasn’t being buried alongside Kennedy at Arlington Memorial Cemetery.

When the brief service concluded, Fort Worth police began an unpopular assignment that would last years and resurface over the decades – guarding Oswald’s grave.

Every day, every night, a contingent of Fort Worth’s cops patrolled the cemetery, kept eyes on the grave and waited. At the close of every shift, these officers left what they called a parting gift on the grave of the cop-killer and assassin.

Officers related these accounts and other stories about the Oswald ordeal in our book, Fort Worth Cops: The Inside Stories, available now through Amazon.

We also have the story of how an officer, annoyed with a persistent reporter, inadvertently began the baseless rumor that Oswald wasn’t in the casket. Decades later that rumor resulted in the exhumation of his body.
