We teach people how to BEAT Homelessness! We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving youth, single parent families and veterans struggling with poverty and homelessness in, and around Tarrant County, Texas. Beyond serving immediate needs, we seek to equip and empower those we serve to restore hope, dignity and self worth as they work to achieve stability, transformation and self-sufficiency
. We take a holistic approach meeting people at their point of need, walking with them and providing opportunity for self-improvement through relative programs, resources, continued education, relational case management and mentoring.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
There are many good-hearted, well-intentioned, faith following, dedicated people and organizations that serve people experiencing homelessness throughout Tarrant County, Texas, and they do a wonderful job! Some feed, some provide clothing, some provide temporary shelter, some hand out sleeping bags, tents, personal hygiene kits or other items, and still others, provide spiritual nourishment. Compassionate gestures and acts of kindness are great but, those alone do NOT help alleviate the issue(s) of homelessness, or even begin to help end a person or families episode of homelessness. In fact, some might argue that those kind gestures enable people to stay right where they are at. For Christians, we know what the Bible says about the subject, and we believe Jesus showed us exactly what we are supposed to do for those in need. However, regardless of religious beliefs, or lack thereof, we can all agree that helping a fellow human during their time of need is the RIGHT thing to do!
So What Makes Us Different?
1). We take a different approach. Rather than providing a person with only an immediate need (food, water, clothing, etc.), we seek to serve the whole person in a way that equips and empowers them to lift themselves up! For us the feeding, clothing and providing basic necessities is just a means to a cause. You see, we use these opportunities to get to know the people we serve. To build friendships, trust and learn who they are and what brought them to the streets or night shelters. Our mission is to give them far more than a meal or a hand out...we want to give them a hand up, a shoulder to lean on, an opportunity to move forward and a way to get back home! We meet people at their point of need, walk with them through the process of healing, recovery and restoration on their journey to freedom and self sufficiency.
2). Our organization owns and operates a 9,600 sq. facility known as The Transfer Center (Flag Building) which is, not only our home but, also a place that we make available to other organizations, agencies and groups to provide programs, services, resources, classes and services to those we serve. Our Founder's vision was to create a faith-based community center where the church and community would come together to serve people experiencing homelessness, and since acquiring the building in 2015, this is exactly what our building has become! Today, dozens of organizations, agencies, churches and community groups use our facility to serve those in need; many specifically serving men, women and children experiencing homelessness. In 2018, more than 6,300 people walked through our doors seeking assistance! We knew early on that we could not do everything ourselves, and we certainly did not have the resources required to help people break the chains of poverty and homelessness by ourselves. It is our belief that We Can Do More Together and The Transfer Center has become a place where that belief is carried out!
3). We are a privately funded organization. No government grants means we do not have to deal with red-tape, regulations and reports in order to serve people! We know from experience that timing is of the essence when answering the needs of those we serve. So many people fall through the cracks when bureaucracy is involved! Private funding allows us the ability to say "YES" to people other agencies have on waiting lists or, worse yet, denied assistance. Our work is made possible by people like YOU!
