I am very sorry to report that Masked Villain is currently out of service. I have contracted COVID-19, and thus cannot safely distribute masks. The irony of this not lost on me. I make face masks to help stop the spread of the pandemic, yet I get this stupid virus. Kinda funny, except for the god-awful symptoms and potential death and whatnot.

As soon as I am no longer infected and verified as such via CDC guidelines and further tests, I will post here. Until then, I’m down for a bit. I love you all. Please mask up, stay safe, and avoid anyone dumb enough to refuse to wear a mask.

WE’RE BACK! Our machines had to spend some time in the repair shop, but they’re finally home and stitchin’ better than ever! Turns out sewing machines can make several hundred masks before needing some maintenance- especially when they were last cleaned/tuned up many, many years ago- so a grip of cash and countless hours of fretting later, our babies are back!

Not only are we making masks again, but we’ve got a LOT of good news:

- Tons of new fabric colors and patterns! Attached are pictures of what we’ve got, so if you’re looking for a specific one please shoot us a message and we’ll get you set up 🙂

- Decorate your mask with our selection of fabric markers, spray cans of fabric ink, hundreds of stencils (from letters/numbers in different fonts to mandalas, shapes, and just too many designs to list), 10mm stainless steel spikes, and as always our custom vinyl courtesy of Domain Apparel (HUGE shoutout to Chris)! Pick a solid color and go to town with our 32 color set of fabric markers. Just please keep it at least a LITTLE classy- unless it’s really clever 💁🏻‍♂️

- Got an old tshirt you want made into a mask? We’ve gotcha covered. We can now stitch jersey knit material, so turn that old Spring Break Beer Pong Champ 2006 tshirt into a virus-blocking face mask!

That’s just what we have on hand, with plenty more coming soon. Attached to this post are pics of some of the 100% cotton fabric we have on hand, but act quickly if you want some- we’re getting dozens and dozens of requests daily, and if we run out before you stake your claim, well, then you’ll just have to settle for some other badass choice.

We’re also in need of help, specifically with cutting out pieces of fabric. It’s pretty straightforward: cut 8x16” rectangles out of the fabric with a supplied rotary slicer, hand them off to us, and we’ll take care of the rest. Precision is essential, so we’re working on a few wooden templates to make things simple and easy. If you can help, please contact Masked Villain or hit up one of our admins with a PM telling us what you’re able to do. We don’t have much money, but if we can provide you with incentive we’ll do our best.

REMEMBER: FREE MASKS. DONATIONS APPRECIATED. If you *can* make a donation they are MASSIVELY helpful and will probably land you a COVID-compliant elbow bump and access to some of our off-menu options and accessories 😉 Otherwise, we’re gonna do what we’ve always done: give away masks to anyone who needs it. So. Need mask? Holler. We got you covered, literally and figuratively.

Many, many thanks to everyone who has helped us grow, from donating machines and fabric to teaching us how to sew without excessive blood loss 🙂 Chris, Kitty, Ryan, Evan, Jennifer, Shawn, and everyone whose name I’m blanking on: you’re the kind of people the world needs more of, and we can’t thank you enough for your help ❤️❤️❤️

ALRIGHTY! Go check out our fabric options, send us a message and getcha bad self a suitably badass mask!

WAIT, FREE MASKS? REALLY?
Yes, really. Masked Villain is run by people that believe everyone should have a high quality, reusable, good lookin’ face mask to help stay safe in this weird world we are currently living in. They’re machine washable, feature our sweet ass logo on ‘em, and are the most customizable and versatile masks around.

HOW DO I GET A MASK?
Just ask! Send us a message on Facebook or shoot us an email with what you would like. If you’re in Fort Worth (or up to driving here) you’re welcome to swing by our place and pick up your package, and if not we can ship it to you via USPS.

USPS Priority shipping is $8.30 and arrives the next day for anywhere in or around DFW, with $50 insurance and a tracking number included with each package at no charge. If you’re out of state it may take an extra day, but so far the USPS has done an amazing job at getting almost every package delivered right on time.

We’re currently sticking to USPS Priority as we’ve had some issues with a handful of folks trying to game the system, but that’s bound to happen. And hey- if you need extras for friends, family or the guy at work who coughs like he’s going for distance, let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate as best as we can! Please don’t, however, ask for 8 for your family of three then claim they never arrived. We are a very small group, and can’t afford to be taken for a ride like that too often. No sense in trying to pull a fast one- we’re former villains, after all 🙂

HOW CAN I WEAR THESE COOL AF MASKS?
Any way you want to! The elastic can be looped over your ears, wrapped around your head, hooked to your hat or a headband- the possibilities are endless!

Check out our video on how to set up your mask, or read the instructions included in your package. The metal eyelets are what make our masks so versatile, and the guy who thought of it is way too proud of that.

WHAT KIND OF MASK DO I GET?
Our mask is 100% cotton with four brass eyelets stamped into the corners with a built-in filter pocket and flexible metal nose bridge piece to fit it snugly and comfortably to your face. We offer our original pleated mask as well as our new surgical style that’s curved to fit over your nose and chin. Each mask is individually packaged and comes with:

- Metal bulb-shaped safety pins. They’re safety pins shaped like light bulbs (see the pictures below, they’re pretty badass) that you open, push through or tie to the elastic and clip to the eyelets.

- Elastic straps to attach to the pins/eyelets. To ensure a perfect fit, we include a long piece of elastic that you simply cut to your desired size and hook to your mask.

- Filter material. This is optional, as the mask itself is more than enough for many folks, and can be anything from cheesecloth to MERV-13 air filter material. It costs us considerably more to include filters, so donations are really, REALLY appreciated if you’re able to afford it- still, we will do our very best to include whatever you need as long as we have it on hand 🙂

FILTER MATERIAL? WHAT?
Our masks are 100% cotton and do a fine job of keeping unwanted stuff out of your face holes. We include a bit of cheesecloth with your mask upon request that helps keep even more moisture and germs out of your mouth and nose.

However, if you really want to make your mask as virus-blocking as possible, we’ve got loads of stuff to put in there:

- Cheesecloth. Simple, lightweight and breathable, this is the most common and popular material used. It simply adds a little more mass to catch particles coming through your mask.

- Carbon filter. This is a polymer fabric impregnated with activated charcoal to scrub the air coming through it. It’s just as breathable as anything else, but boosts the filtration potential a LOT. It also adds a little form to the mask, so it looks rad too!

- MERV-13 air filter material. This is the best, most COVID-blocking material we can get. HVAC systems use a range of filters to keep particulate matter out of the air, and the MERV rating indicates how well the filter works. Most residential and commercial systems use MERV-3 to MERV-11, with the latter being very efficient and effective at getting everything from dust and dirt to pollen and pet dander out. Hospitals use MERV-13 and above, which is so finely made that it catches most viruses and bacteria! And we have that! It’s fiberglass-free and very flexible, so putting it in your mask makes for just about the best, most impermeable mask you can get. It’s can be a tad less breathable (duh, it catches viruses that way) but is not even noticed by most people.

- Whatever YOU want! Whether you have some spare t-shirts to cut small pieces out of or an amazing NASA-engineered air filtration system, you can pop it in the filter pocket and be good to go.

OK IMMA ASK YOU FOR A MASK, THESE ARE RAD
You’re damn right they’re rad as hell, and get at us! This is a project run by one dude and a handful of volunteers, and we hope you find these to be as dope as we do.

We do accept donations! They help us more than you can imagine and allow us to continue making and distributing our masks, as Masked Villain was started and funded by one guy, his wallet, and a donated sewing machine and fabric. As a nonprofit organization, we are able to keep operating due to the thoughtful folks who send a couple bucks our way.

To donate, contact us via Facebook, email or text message and we’ll get you set up. We accept CashApp, Zelle, Venmo, and the money transfer thing on Facebook. You can also mail us a check or cash if you’d like!

Please contact us with any questions, suggestions, or solid memes Stay safe, and remember: wearing a mask not only helps you keep healthy but helps LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. Do your part!

WHAT TF IS MASKED VILLAIN?

Masked Villain is a nonprofit group of volunteers and donors working together to make and distribute reusable face masks at no charge. There are countless vendors selling their masks on eBay and Etsy, and that’s cool, but our goal is to help anyone we can rather than profit from a catastrophe. That’s not our bag- not trying to throw shade on anyone who sells homemade face masks, it’s just not what we want to do.

We’ve put a substantial amount of money and weeks of work into MV. All proceeds from custom designs, accessories and donations go straight back into buying more supplies. It’s a lot of work, sure, and we are thrilled to be able to help get folks what they need to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Our masks are made of 100% cotton with a pocket to hold any filter material that’ll fit. Four metal eyelets allow for anything to be used as straps in several ways, from over the ear like a surgical mask to around the head and neck for a maximum seal to prevent air from bypassing the fabric and filter. Information and pictures are available on our Masks post (link provided below), and please contact us with any questions or suggestions you have.

Custom orders (such as screen printed designs/graphics, aesthetic accessories, storage solutions, multiple-refill filter systems and so on) are welcome and encouraged, as we charge only a touch more than the cost of material. That’s how we can continue to make super-badass masks and recoup the funds needed to buy stuff like fabric, eyelets, elastic cord and such.

For orders sent through the USPS we ask only enough to cover shipping ($8.30 for 2-day Priority Express delivery), and if you’re unable to cover it, just let us know and we’ll figure something out 🙂 We advise using USPS, as their rates are solid and by far the easiest to work with, though we’re happy to use FedEx, UPS, DHL etc if you prefer.

WHAT’S UP I HEARD FOLKS WEAR MASKS NOW

Some of y’all may be aware that there’s a little bit of a pandemic going on. The world has changed dramatically since COVID-19 was officially declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on 3/11/2020, having since killed over 229,330 people globally at the time of this post. More than 62,200 of the victims have died in the U.S. alone as of 4/30/2020 with the body count rising by the hour. In less than 2.5 months, COVID-19 has claimed more American lives than the total killed in the Vietnam War, an actual death-based shooting-bombing-stabbing war that lasted a lot longer than a few months.

Look. You’re certainly familiar with the current situation already, so we’re not going to post a thesis on it here. It’s bad. Really bad. And in the U.S., at least, it’s going to continue killing citizens or even get worse before it gets better due to a whole lot of factors best discussed elsewhere.

Though it feels hopeless, scary, and just plain bad right now, every person can and should do what they can to help stem the spread of this viral bastard: wash your hands often, practice social distancing, avoid crowded places, and wear a face mask.

YEAH BUT *I* DON’T GOT THE CORONAVIRUS

Wearing a mask protects the wearer as well as literally everyone else. Obviously it’s a good idea to prevent as many virus-carrying particles out of your body, and a properly made and fitted mask does just that. Additionally, it keeps the wearer, who may be infected despite showing no symptoms, from releasing their spit/snot/fluids into the air. The gross little cloud of “I was raised in a barn” shot into the air floats around, all geared up to be sucked into a pair of lungs, coat surfaces so it can hitch a ride into one of your orifices, or otherwise get inside you and work it’s magic. It’s estimated that one infected person will spread it at least three others, and given the bag of tricks it has to propagate itself it’s not hard to see how and why it infects a population so quickly.

See, COVID-19 is a tiny little jackass roughly 15nm (nanometers) in size. To put that in perspective, take a millimeter (5/127th of an inch) and divide it by 1,000. That’s a micrometer (about 0.000039 inches). Small, right? Now divide that micrometer by 1,000. THAT is a nanometer: one thousandth of one thousandth of 0.000039 inches. Filtering something that small from the air you breathe is really, really hard to do, but far from impossible. Medical grade PPE can do so with amazing efficiency, but that doesn’t do much good if it’s not being worn. Doctors, nurses and medical personnel are on the literal frontlines in this, yet are severely short on PPE. They get dibs, because they need that level of protection. Period.

The CDC, WHO, NIH and such recommend that all citizens wear some sort of face mask while in public. Since a trip to Kroger isn’t as likely to expose someone to the virus as a trip to a hospital ICU ward, a much simpler kind of mask can help dramatically reduce the odds of contracting it. Still, there are standards to follow: the mask must be made of materials that are effective and obtainable to the general public, assembled well and worn properly.

So, with a nationwide shortage of PPE that’s gotten so bad that even professional healthcare workers are forced to either wear a single-use mask or, well, go without one and resign themselves to a very slow method of su***de, it’s up to the public at large to find or make their own.

Or get one from Masked Villain, which is way easier. And cooler. And free.

That’s enough rambling, we’ll come back to this. In the meantime, send us a message if you’re barefaced and vulnerable, and we’ll send you a mask.
