On this rare Friday school holiday, our Academic Year Interns hosted grad students from UNT Health’s Department of Public Health for a morning of farm work and conversation about food insecurity. After a shared lunch, the UNT students paired up with our interns for a workshop exploring careers in public health and how our two missions intersect. A great way to spend a Friday in October! 2026 marks our 5th year as a nonprofit organization. This year, we employed 26 local high school students for our six-week summer program, including 8 interns who returned in leadership roles. We also launched our Academic Year Program, employing 6 returning interns last spring, and ten who will begin their 12-week Saturday internship this fall.

North Texas Giving Day is upon us, and we would deeply appreciate your gift! We need to raise $15,000 to support our spring initiatives for 2027.

The GOOD NEWS is that we’ve secured a $7,500 matching grant, so we’re already halfway there! The grantor wishes to remain anonymous for now, but when we reach $7,500, their match will automatically be applied and we’ll get to thank them publicly! So please - help us get there!

- $2,000 will sponsor a youth/intern for one academic season of work/leadership development
- $500 will help us implement a farm-to-neighborhood market in Fort Worth communities experiencing food insecurity
- $100 will cover the cost of a professional workshop or field trip for youth interns
- ANY amount will help us grow more incredible youth leaders and help us earn our match of $7,500.

Our three days at The Food Project was such a good investment in the future of FunkyTown Food Project. We’re leaving with knowledge, gratitude, and a new community of folks doing the same important work in their parts of the country. From visiting three of TFP’s farms, to working in the fields with their youth leaders, to having roundtable discussions and workshops with like-minded colleagues, The Food Project buoyed, encouraged, and inspired us to keep going. We’re excited to get back to FunkyTown!

FunkyTown Food Project was inspired by and modeled after The Food Project in Boston - a nonprofit organization that has spent 30+ years working at the intersection of youth, food, and community. Perhaps one of the most beautiful things they do is readily share their knowledge and experience so that orgs like ours can replicate the program. That way, rather than reinventing the wheel, we all simply adapt what is already proven to our own regions, communities, and land. This week, our Executive Director, Development Director, and Board Chair are in Boston soaking in as much knowledge and experience as we can, along with similar orgs from Oklahoma, New York, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
