Wedgwood Historical Association

WHA is NOT a neighborhood association or homeowners' association. A unique and wonderful aspect of Wedgwood is its diversity in ranch house styles.

Collecting information on the houses and history of Wedgwood, a neighborhood in southwest Fort Worth, and providing education on the historical value of Wedgwood homes. MISSION:

The Wedgwood Historical Association (WHA) is a nonprofit corporation with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status founded in March 2021 whose mission is to:

Promote awareness of and appreciation for the architecture and design of ho

uses in the Wedgwood neighborhood;

Encourage home maintenance, renovations and rehabilitation that respect the historic home’s original character and style; and

Collect and record information and documents of historical significance pertaining to Wedgwood and its development. For our purposes, the physical boundaries of Wedgwood are those of the neighborhood associations. There are some houses in Wedgwood East that are listed as being in the South Hills addition on property information but are generally referred to as being part of Wedgwood. INCLUSIVITY STATEMENT:
While the Wedgwood Historical Association wishes to celebrate the architecture and design of the houses of Wedgwood and to gather information and memories about the neighborhood’s history, we fully recognize that Wedgwood has not always been welcoming or accepting of non-white or non-Christian families. The “happier life” promised by the developers of Wedgwood in 1955 was not initially available to all residents of Fort Worth, and not everyone’s memories and experiences of this time will be pleasant. WHA hopes that our endeavors will acknowledge the similar diversity of the neighborhood’s current population and help to foster a community that truly welcomes and appreciates ALL of our residents.

Yesterday two of our board members attended the monthly Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce Coffee Connect. WHA recently joined the Chamber, and we have already met some great people and made some great connections! Did you know you can access historic deed cards for Tarrant County real estate and learn a little bit about your Wedgwood home's history??

Below is the historic deed card for Wedgwood Addition, Block 24, Lot 27. The front page of the card lists all of the owners (up to 1984). The first owner is often Wedgwood Land Company or E.L. Baker, one of the developers. The second entry is often the builder, in this case Dib Inc. The builder information is very interesting for us because we can see where various builders worked and learn to identify their styles.

The back page gives some details about the property's construction, and here you can see that the original roof material was wood (shingles) and that at least one of the flooring materials was hardwood. There's a diagram of the home's layout; the dotted line indicates an attached garage. A carport would have a solid line between it and the house.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, and Wedgwood is home to some outstanding nonprofits! Each of these organizations adds to the fabric of the community and makes their own unique contributions, and we love it when we're able to join forces. The Wedgwood developers' vision for the Country Club brought to life!

The graphic is from a FWST ad dated June 23, 1957, before the club had even opened. The photograph is from the first anniversary celebrations for the club on August 11, 1958: "Before the formal party, the pool was a popular sunning and swimming spot. From the left are Albert O'Neal, in the water; Mrs. Rodney E. McReynolds, getting a hand from Tommy Parker; Kay McKee, in white suit; Carol Richards, in white jacket, and Mrs. William C. Richards, in lounge chair."

One of several photographs published by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram about Wedgwood Country Club's First Anniversary celebrations on August 11, 1958. This one gives us a rare glimpse of the interior of the club! An earlier article mentions the club's color scheme as "champagne, off-white, aqua and blue with accents of tangerine and chrome yellow."

The Texas Treasure Business Award is not just for barber shops and beauty parlors! Wedgwood still has at least a couple businesses that would qualify--Cooper's Footcare Facility and Wedgwood Animal Hospital.
