In response to Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith's recent hate speech about Islam, saying "I hate Islam, it's a demonic death cult," and that it is important to "give people permission to hate again," https://indianapublicradio.org/news/2026/05/lt-gov-beckwith-i-hate-islam/ Indiana Center for Middle East Peace Executive Director Michael Spath, on behalf of the ICMEP board, has released the following statement:

To members of the Fort Wayne Islamic community:

Ahlus-Sunnah Mosque
Bosnian Islamic Cultural Center
Islamic Center of Fort Wayne
Masjid Al Hidayah
Masjid Burmese Noor ul-Islam – Muslim Education and Community Center
Taqwa Mosque
Universal Education Foundation

Salaam aleichem!

Warmest fraternal greetings and peace!

We at Indiana Center for Middle East Peace (ICMEP) write in response to the Indiana Lieutenant Governor’s recent deplorable hate speech against Islam and Muslim communities in Indiana, including Fort Wayne.

We want you to know that we value the long and fruitful partnerships, good works, meals, support, and friendships with the Fort Wayne Muslim community and in particular, your spiritual communities.

We know that the Qur’an is consistent with other religious and humanistic traditions in upholding the democratic values of peace, human dignity and human rights, and freedom. Sura Al-Baqarah (2:148) states it clearly: “So compete with one another in doing good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together [for judgment]. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.” You, our fellow citizens, together with us and many other people of good will contribute in multiple ways to the mutual respect we have for each other in Fort Wayne, “the city of faiths.”

Hate speech is itself violence that must not be tolerated in a pluralistic, democratic society. ICMEP calls on all elected officials, including Senator Jim Banks and Senator Todd Young, Governor Mike Braun, our national, state, and local representatives and office-holders to condemn the Lieutenant Governor’s remarks.

We appreciate very much the Sheikh Hamza’s generous and gracious invitation to learn more about Islam, with the exhortation that “Understanding is built through knowledge, dialogue, and genuine human connection, not through fear, stereotypes, misinformation, or political rhetoric. I encourage everyone to seek the truth with an open heart and an open mind, and to judge Islam by its teachings and Muslims by their character and conduct.”

It is only through such mutual respect, relationship building, and friendship that we can create together what Martin Luther King, Jr. called “the beloved community,”

With heartfelt appreciation for the presence of our Muslim friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens for their many contributions to our Fort Wayne community. We stand with you as sisters and brothers in a common humanity!

“I want them to remember the children of Gaza, and standing with them…We are more than what happened to us.”

We are deeply grateful to Khaleel for journeying to Fort Wayne, IN to speak with us about his life in Gaza, his family, his injuries, his recovery and his hopes. Steve Sosebee with HEAL Palestine joined Khaleel to talk about their organizations work bringing children injured in Gaza to the US for pro bono medical treatment and rehabilitation. Steve said, “There are thousands of kids like Khaleel, who’ve suffered traumatic injuries, traumatic amputations, that need medical care, that can’t get it inside Gaza because the medical system has been destroyed,” and reminded the crowd, “I think it’s important for Americans to understand how our tax money is being spent. It’s important for Americans to understand what’s happening on the ground in Gaza, and I think there’s no better person or better people to share their stories than the kids who’ve been directly affected, like Khaleel.”

Special thanks to 21Alive for sharing this story. “I want (them) to remember the children injured in Gaza, and standing with them,” Khaleel said.

We are deeply grateful for the courage and commitment of Khaleel to visit Fort Wayne and speak with us about his life, family, injuries and hopes; to Steve Sosebee and HEAL Palestine for their work bringing healing to children wounded in this violence, and to 21Alive for highlighting Khaleel's story, and the relevance of how our nation's policies affect real lives around the globe.

Khaleel Abu Shaban,15, was walking to a barbershop in Gaza City in April of 2024 when he was hit by an Israeli rocket that took both of his legs and put him in a coma.

He also sustained a head injury, now stabilized. His mother and sister are with him in Chicago. Read more about Khaleel's journey here https://www.healpalestine.org/impact-story/khaleels-resilience-shines-through-his-healing-journey/

Khaleel will visit Fort Wayne to talk about his experiences. Khaleel, a teenager from Gaza, will speak in Fort Wayne, IN next Thursday (5/28), 6:30 pm at Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne (501 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne, IN, 46802). Join us to hear from him about his experiences in Gaza, his story of resilience, and the work of HEAL Palestine.

Khaleel, now 15, was severely injured on April 22, 2024 when a bomb struck on his way to a Gaza City barber, requiring emergency amputation of both his legs. He was evacuated to Egypt, then came to Chicago with HEAL Palestine, an organization which brings injured young people from Gaza to the US for pro bono surgery and other medical care. Steve Sosebee, founder of HEAL Palestine, will join Khaleel for the program.

This program is free, open to the public. It will also be live-streamed, and posted as a video a few days after the event on the ICMEP YouTube Channel.

HEAL Palestine has brought over 60 injured children and youth from Gaza to the US for free surgery and medical care. Their stories make local, regional, and national headlines. Indiana Center for Middle East Peace was next on the list to help receive a young man from Gaza when the Trump administration stopped issuing visas to Palestinians, even for humanitarian care.

Please join us for Steve's and Khaleel's presentation on Thursday, May 28, 6:30pm at Plymouth Church.
