Did you know that we accept Community Cat Walk-ins? 😸

Community cats are free-roaming cats or kittens that have no identifiable owners. These cats are reproducing at an alarming rate, adding to the already heavy burden of pet overpopulation.

Community cats are typically not adoptable. They have a home —outdoors. By spaying or neutering a free-roaming cat, and returning it to the area that it is from, we can begin to sterilize that area and reduce the number of cats entering shelters. TNR (Trap Neuter Return) is a proven plan that is effective in reducing the number of free-roaming cats in our community.

You can bring Community Cats to our Clinic Monday-Wednesday at 8am to get spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccine, microchip, pain medication, and an ear tip all for only $40!

For any questions on our Community Cat program, you can email [email protected]

Do you know a teen who loves animals and is interested in helping out at an animal shelter or needs volunteering hours? We are now offering volunteering opportunities to ages 13-17 one Saturday a month here at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control!

Teens will be asked to help with anything from folding laundry, putting away dishes, cutting up hotdogs and cheese for our dogs, making various enrichment treats for our animals, cleaning small animal cages, making no sew kitty fleece blankets, and more. Teens are not permitted to handle the animals since they are under the age of 18, but they will be able to interact with the animals with the assistance of a staff member. In addition to volunteering, the teens will get an educational tour of our building and learn about what FWACC does, and they will be able to meet and spend time socializing adoptable animals.

Sometimes we do offer special months where teens can learn from a professional in an animal related career. This adorable picture is a sneak peek into this month’s upcoming session, so if your teen wants some puppy snuggles, sign them up for August 20th! We will post about when these future special experiences will be offered in addition to the normal once a month volunteering options.

To learn more about this opportunity for teens, please visit our website. Our next session is coming up soon on Saturday, August 20th at noon and spots are limited: https://www.cityoffortwayne.org/education/animal-care-teens.html

*This puppy is not available for adoption*

Yay!! 🎉💖🐾

It takes a village.

A village of staff willing to work long, hard hours to save the littlest lives that come to the shelter.

A village of foster families willing to take a litter of kittens in to help them grow and give them love.

A village of supporters who drop $20 on supplies so we keep saving the tiny kittens that come in every single day.

A village of organizations who see the hard work and overwhelming number of animals our staff are working to save.

Today our village got a little bigger. We are so grateful to announce that we have been granted $37,135 from the Orphan Kitten Club to hire more staff to support our ever-growing foster program. More than 850 little lives have been saved by our rockstar foster team so far this year and with the additional staff they will be able to provide more support for our foster families, help more animals and provide more positive outcomes for the animals that come through our doors every day.

Our village is built on one simple foundation; foster love!

Va©©ine reactions can happen, and when we bombard a pet’s immune system with 6 different things at once, the chances of an adverse reaction increase. The safest interval between immunizations is about 3 weeks. Sometimes a combination va©©ine is unavoidable, but you can ensure that it is given by itself when your pet is healthy, and not while under anesthesia.

Signs of a reaction may include:
- pain at the injection site
- fever
- lethargy
- lameness
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- anaphylactic reaction
- hives
- swelling
- tumor formation
- shock
- death

🛑 If you think your pet is suffering from a vaccine reaction call your vet immediately.

Side effects usually start appearing a couple of hours after the shot, but they can also take days, and even years, to appear. The most severe reactions are generally apparent within a few minutes.

Most cases of va©©ine reactions are never reported to manufacturers and many are never reported to the veterinarian administering the va©©ine. This contributes to the narrative that they’re universally safe and can be given needlessly.
