"This weekend, we will see many social media posts of pool parties, BBQ dinners, shopping sales and beach days stating, “Happy Memorial Day.” And as wonderful as it is to be able to be with family, this weekend is not a celebration and it definitely is not meant to be a happy occasion. It is a time of remembrance for those who have served in our armed forces and never returned home. It is a time for us to honor those who have served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is a time for us to thank those families who have been left behind without a son or daughter, a husband or wife, a father or mother, a brother or sister.

I urge you to teach your children the importance of this day. Many Americans do not know the true meaning of what Memorial Day is, other than the weekend that kicks off the summer. Make the time to take your children to a memorial service in your local town or visit a memorial and talk to them about the importance of this day. Our children must not take their freedom for granted and know that it came with a precious price. As parents and grandparents we must teach the next generation to honor and respect this day."
