Pause AI - Fort Wayne

Pause AI - Fort Wayne Experts agree that an AI lab might unintentionally create an AI system we can’t control. We need to Pause.

It could outcompete humans for resources, driving us to extinction without even replacing us with anything meaningful.

"This isn't a ban or moratorium. It's a proposal to require adequate safety measures for a technology that, according to its developers, has a significant chance to cause human extinction. Is that too much to ask?"
- Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science,
UC Berkeley

Safety shouldn't be optional when it comes to technologies that could reshape - or even end - human civilization.

The scramble to create superhuman AI has put us on the path to extinction—but it's not too late to change course, as two of the field's earliest researchers explain in this clarion call for humanity.

Hello everyone,

Since April 2024, I have been involved in AI safety activism, including founding the local branch of PauseAI – PauseAI Fort Wayne. My efforts have included educating people one-on-one, handing out flyers on the PFW campus in Fort Wayne, and reaching out to my representatives and their advisors, as well as encouraging others to do the same. However, due to personal reasons (with a few specific exceptions that are not relevant to this audience), I will be taking a hiatus from all AI activism activities.

I still believe that AI safety is the most important and urgent cause in the world, but at this moment, I am not in a place where I can be as effective as I would like to be. If anyone in the area is interested in continuing this work, I would be happy to hand things over for the time being. I intend to return to activism when I have the capacity to contribute more effectively, but I cannot say when that will be.

Regards,
Brian

This "AI scientist" modified its own code to lengthen its intended runtime.

Its goal was to write a paper - the AI decided to change its ex*****on script to get more compute.

These "bloopers" won't be considered funny when AI can spread autonomously across computers... Which they are getting quite close to.

Time to hit the brakes ⏸️

Superintelligence will be our last invention... and not in a good way. Nothing humans has ever made has been safe on the first iteration, but we only get one shot with superintelligence. If we screw it up, we won't get another try. We don't know how to get it right, and the companies pursuing it have no right to gamble humanity's future on pulling a miraculous safe implementation out of a hat. We need to PAUSE research towards AGI and ASI.

Stop superhuman AI that we can’t control by not building it in the first place. Pause AI.

Stop superhuman AI that we can’t control by not building it in the first place. Pause AI.

In response to Meta's release of their latest model, PauseAI led protests in San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, Paris, London, & Tokyo.

Meta’s recklessness imperils our world.

Meta just released their latest AI model, Llama-3 405B. This model was trained with >5x as many parameters as previous Llama models. It marks another leap in open-weights models.

Meta’s release comes after years of Meta-funded lobbying to sabotage AI regulation. Meta has given millions to the American Edge Project, a campaign that’s railed against regulation of frontier AI models, warning that China will overtake the US in AI if we enact any regulations.

These efforts reflect a trend of denial by Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun. LeCun has dismissed AI risk, even though the other 2 of the 3 ‘godfathers of AI’ note that superhuman AI could cause human extinction and that it is very hard to control something that is smarter than you.

LeCun and his colleagues at Meta seem determined to race ahead, building increasingly advanced AI as quickly as possible. These are not neutral actors. Their position is similar to fossil-fuel companies who ignore the risks of climate change.

The best AI researchers have admitted that we have no idea how these systems work. Models are often fine-tuned & exploited to do dangerous things months after being released. But Meta's open-weights approach means that these models can never be retracted.

If present-day models are already unpredictable, the effects of future models could be cataclysmic. But Meta is racing to train more powerful models. Llama 3.1 was trained on 16,000 GPUs; by the end of this year, Meta plans to have 350,000 GPUs dedicated to AI.

Attempts to build more powerful AI to beat another country are foolish. They rely on the assumption that we’ll be able to control AI systems & use them to our advantage— but AI safety experts tell us that we don’t know how to control systems that are more intelligent than we are.

Superhuman AI poses a threat to all people, regardless of nationality. We desperately need international coordination to stop the development of such systems, now more than ever. The global community must reject Meta’s narrative and listen to the better angels of our nature.

This race is not about the US versus China, or any AI company versus another. It’s superintelligent AI versus humanity, and the only winning move is not to play.
