The Fox Island Alliance, Inc.

is a nonprofit organization whose purposes are to help preserve and develop the natural features of Fox Island County Park, raise funds, promote Fox Island's use as an educational center & coordinate volunteer efforts.

The pipes are playing, the drums beat low! The wood spirits await the opening of the new trails at Fox Island to greet the visitors on opening day. Watch for the news of the trail opening event and the return to the Upper and Lower Dune trails!

The wood spirits took advantage of the fine weather on the eve of the vernal equinox and took their places along the “Hiker’s Winter Trail” running west from the the gazebo to post #28. A comfort bird, an 8-pointed star and a mushroom along with 21 spirits are placed waiting to be discovered. Each carving is a one of a kind work by either Tim or Jeff Ormiston. Visitors may keep what they find (one per family, please) or move them for others to find. Seekers of the carvings should be aware of possible bad weather that could make hiking in the forest a dangerous undertaking in the coming days. Please take a photo of found carvings and post on the Alliance or the Fox Island page.

Fox Island Alliance Board of Directors President, Tim Ormiston, was interviewed for the “Perspective” section of the Monday, July 22, 2024 Journal Gazette. Tim was asked 5 questions pertaining to Fox Island, the Alliance and the Indiana Master Naturalist program.

The Fox Island Alliance is celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year! Only FIA members and their guests are invited to attend and share in the food, fellowship and fun on April 13. After a class on “Fish-Anatomy and Physiology” these youngsters visited the Kids Discovery Area at Fox Island to practice their shelter building skills. While Fox Island remains closed to the public, this group of homeschoolers meet with Alliance members Jeff Ormiston and Joy Maassel monthly to explore the park’s natural offerings.

On October 13th Alliance directors Dan Preest, Tim Ormiston, Jeff Ormiston and volunteers Tristan and Tara Lee and Joy Maassel began clearing access to the Fox Island "Salamander Pond" along Lake Road. This small pond has provided many frogs, toads and salamanders for the enjoyment of park visitors. The pond has become overgrown since June of 2022 but now will once again be attractive as a breeding ground for water loving amphibians and insects.
