Today, The League is feeling especially grateful.

We are thrilled to welcome the incredible team from Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilitiesas they spend their United Way of Allen County Day of Caring helping us refresh our building and property.

Their generosity, hard work, and willingness to give their time are making a visible difference here at The League, and we could not be more appreciative.

But today is about more than a refreshed building. It is about community coming together, neighbors helping neighbors, and organizations working side by side to make Northeast Indiana stronger.

To the Turnstone team, THANK YOU. Your service today means so much to us, and we are equally grateful for all you do throughout the year to serve, support, and strengthen our community.

Your voice can help shape the future of independence in Indiana.

Creating stronger, more inclusive communities takes all of us.

The 2026 Independence Indiana Conference will bring together people with disabilities, advocates, community partners, service providers, and local leaders to move beyond conversation and work toward real solutions.

On September 29 and 30 in Noblesville, participants will focus on two areas that directly impact independent living:

• Housing
• Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS)

This isn't just an opportunity to listen. Participants will work together to identify barriers, develop solutions, build partnerships, and select an achievable project to put into action over the following 11 months.

People with disabilities are especially encouraged to participate and bring their lived experiences to the table. Just as important are the advocates, partners, professionals, and community leaders who can listen, collaborate, and help turn those experiences and ideas into meaningful change.

Whether you bring lived experience, professional expertise, community connections, or simply a commitment to building a more accessible Indiana, there is a place for you in this conversation.

Independence Indiana is hosting disability advocates, for networking, learning, and rallying support for disability independence in Indiana.

Do you help a loved one manage their health care? As a caregiver, you play an important role in protecting them from Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse.

One of the easiest ways to help is by reviewing their Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs), Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), and medical bills. Make sure they are only being charged for services and medical equipment they actually received and needed.

By reviewing statements regularly and reporting suspicious activity, you can help protect your loved one's Medicare benefits and prevent scammers from targeting others.

If something doesn't look right, report it to the Senior Medicare Patrol. Together, we can help stop Medicare fraud before it spreads.

We are proud to support and help share this upcoming community event!

PBS Fort Wayne will present a FREE screening of Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore on Friday, August 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Carroll High School.

The American Masters documentary shares the story of Academy Award-winning actor and advocate Marlee Matlin, told in her native American Sign Language. A discussion will follow the screening.

Opportunities like this help bring greater visibility to the experiences, stories, and voices of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and we are grateful to help promote an event that encourages awareness, representation, and inclusion right here in our community.

Saturday Story: Meet Daphne

Every Monday morning, Daphne starts her week at The League.

She volunteers at our front desk, helping with tasks while building skills, confidence, and experience. It’s something she looks forward to each week.

But this week, Daphne has something new to look forward to.

She got a job.

Daphne recently accepted a position as a Mail Clerk with Tandem, where she’ll be sorting and organizing mail, booklets, and other materials. Some of the very skills she’ll use in her new job are skills she has practiced while volunteering at The League.

And her journey with The League doesn’t stop there.

Daphne is legally blind, has moderate to severe hearing loss, and uses a rollator walker for mobility. She also receives Orientation and Mobility services through The League, helping her build greater independence using the tools and devices that support her every day.

For Daphne, each of these steps is part of something bigger.

“I’m looking forward to being able to be independent, and I’m very excited for a fun life ahead. Thanks to The League.”

That’s what today’s Saturday Story is really about.

Not just getting a job, but having opportunities to build skills, gain confidence, and create greater independence.

Congratulations, Daphne. We can’t wait to see where your next chapter takes you.
