Pedals of Hope was honored to join Parkview Hospital and Noble County Health today in Rome City, Indiana, for their Helmet Giveaway and Safety Event.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and partners, four amazing children were blessed with bicycles from Pedals of Hope. Seeing the smiles on their faces reminds us why we do what we do.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the event, and to all of the volunteers and helpers who made the day possible. We are especially grateful to Parkview Hospital and Noble County Health for their continued partnership and commitment to promoting safety and healthy lifestyles for children and families in our communities.

Together, we’re making a difference—one helmet, one bicycle, and one child at a time. ❤️🚲

What a beautiful day!

On Saturday, 13 Littles from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana received brand new bicycles and helmets through Pedals of Hope. For several of them, it was their very first bike.

A bicycle is a simple thing, but it can mean so much: freedom, confidence, adventure, and the feeling that the world just got a little bigger.

This event was held in honor of our friend Brent, who loved bicycles, believed deeply in mentorship, and had a special gift for bringing people together. He often reminded us that even a small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

We hope these bikes bring years of adventures, laughter, and memories.

Thank you to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, our volunteers, supporters, and everyone who helped make the day possible. Special thanks to Heather Warnecke, Dom Morefield, and Greg Vonderau for helping bring this event to life.
Most of all, congratulations to the kids!

Enjoy the ride. ❤️🚲

🚲❤️ Behind every bike is a child waiting for a reason to smile. ❤️🚲

While many of us have been going about our daily routines, Mark Glass has been putting in the hours, turning wrenches and working hard to make sure 15 bicycles are ready for a very special event this weekend in Indianapolis.

Pedals of Hope is honored to donate 15 bikes to deserving kiddos from the Boys & Girls Club. These young riders will take part in a memorial bike ride, creating memories, building confidence, and experiencing the joy and freedom that comes with having a bicycle of their own.

None of this happens without the dedication of volunteers who believe every child deserves an opportunity to ride, belong, and feel supported. Mark’s hard work is a reminder that something as simple as a bicycle can make a lasting impact in a child’s life.

Please join us in thanking Mark for his dedication and wishing these young riders an unforgettable day. ❤️

🚴‍♂️ One bike. One child. One smile at a time. 🚴‍♀️

Pedals of Hope would like to sincerely thank Parkview Hospital and Noble County Health for their commitment to helmet safety and injury prevention for both children and adults.

We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with them at their community events throughout the year, helping promote safe cycling and healthy lifestyles. Through these events, Pedals of Hope was also able to provide bicycles to children who did not have one of their own, giving more kids the opportunity to experience the joy, freedom, and benefits of riding.

These events have made a positive impact on so many local families, and we are honored to be a part of them. We look forward to joining everyone one last time next Monday in Rome City, Indiana.

Thank you, Parkview Hospital and Noble County Health, for your partnership and for all you do to keep our communities safe, healthy, and active.

Today, Pedals of Hope had the privilege of blessing a very deserving student from Kekionga Middle School with a bike. 🚲❤️

His teachers and school staff recognized a real need and wanted to make sure this young man had reliable transportation. What makes this even more special is that he has worked hard, done extremely well in school this year, and continues to show determination and character every single day.

This wasn’t just about giving away a bike — it was about reminding a young student that his community sees him, believes in him, and wants to help him succeed. Sometimes a small act of kindness can make a life-changing difference.

A huge thank you to the incredible staff at Kekionga Middle School for caring enough to step in and give this student a hand up. Pedals of Hope is honored to be a small part of his journey. 💙

We want to say a Big Thank you to Dicky’s 21 Taps, Jasmine Young Blutt, and Todd Kabisch with the Fort Wayne Fire Department, for Supporting us in another bicycle giveaway. We as a group effort were able to Bless Ricky, a great cook for Dickey’s that was currently walking over two miles to work and home because his bicycle had broke down beyond repair.

You might not feel it happening, but every time you clip in and ride, your body is quietly defending your brain.

For years we've known that cycling keeps our hearts strong and our legs powerful. But new research reveals something far more profound. When you ride, your muscles release a hormone called irisin that crosses into your brain, stimulates the growth of new neurons, and actively fights the processes that lead to Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists at Harvard's Stem Cell Institute recently confirmed what many of us have sensed for years. Movement isn't just good for the body. It's medicine for the mind.

Here's what happens beneath the surface of every ride.

As your legs turn the pedals, your muscle fibers produce a protein called FNDC5. That protein is then cleaved into irisin, a hormone that enters your bloodstream and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Once inside your brain, irisin goes to work in the hippocampus, the region responsible for learning and memory.

In animal studies, researchers found that irisin boosts the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. Think of BDNF as fertilizer for your brain. It encourages the growth of new neurons, strengthens the connections between them, and protects existing brain cells from damage.

Even more striking, when scientists blocked irisin in mice, the cognitive benefits of exercise vanished. When they increased irisin levels in mice with Alzheimer's-like symptoms, memory improved and brain inflammation decreased. The hormone didn't just correlate with better brain health. It caused it.

Human studies are still early, but the findings are promising. Post-mortem analyses of human brains show that people with Alzheimer's have lower levels of irisin than healthy individuals. And in small trials, people who exercised regularly showed measurable increases in circulating irisin, along with better cognitive performance.

The implications are staggering.

We're not just riding to stay fit. We're riding to stay sharp. To remember the names of our grandchildren. To hold onto our independence as we age. To protect the very essence of who we are.

And unlike experimental drugs or unproven supplements, this intervention is free, accessible, and something many of us are already doing. You don't need a prescription. You don't need a lab. You just need a bike and the willingness to ride it regularly.

The evidence suggests that consistency matters more than intensity. Whether you're hammering intervals or enjoying a steady spin through the countryside, your muscles are producing irisin. The key is to keep showing up, week after week, because the protective effects accumulate over time.

So the next time someone asks why you spend so much time on your bike, you can tell them this. You're not just chasing fitness or burning calories. You're building a fortress around your brain. You're investing in decades of clear thinking, sharp memory, and the ability to live fully and independently.

Every pedal stroke is a deposit into your cognitive future.

And that might be the most powerful reason to ride.
