BOLO: Fox with Mange in northern Fort Wayne. Sightings from Vesey Park (Irvington Park) to Spy Run Ave (Highland Park Forest). We are working on a targetted trapping operation for this fox who we believe may be a sibling to our fox Hubble, who came in with mange from the same region. If you see him, please TEXT us at 260-223-0852!

If you live in this area and typically leave food out for strays, you may be feeding this fox. We ask that for the next week, you do not leave any food out during prime fox times (afternoon-evening, or around 2pm-10pm). This will hopefully draw him to our traps instead of your cat food bowls.

If you live in the area and see him, please let us know! If he goes under your porch, or into your garage, or anywhere else that he can be contained, trap him in and shoot us a message and we'll be on the way!

Please note: Mange is highly contagious to humans and animals, so please do not attempt to catch him on your own. DO NOT call Animal Control, as they will euthanize instead of treating (we have posted about this problem several times before with other mangy foxes).

I think he's giving up. Sightings are fewer and he's less active. He's avoided all of our traps and shown no interest in any of the foods we have provided, and we think it's because the smell of the mange infection is stronger than any bait we set out for him.

Time is running out for him, and if we don't catch him soon, he won't survive.

We need your help.

He's been roaming around Vesey Park in Fort Wayne. He heads south on Wells, east to Eastbrook Drive, north until he's just above the park, and back across toward Wells. That's his zone. If you see him, text your sighting to 260-223-0852. If you can corner him, or catch him with a net, or get a box over him, or anything at all to contain him (under your porch? in your garage?), we'll take whatever chance you can get.

Please understand: mange is caused by microscopic mites (sarcoptic mange) that can transfer to humans (it's a type of scabies on us). They itch, but they don't last long (sarcoptic mange mites cannot complete a life cycle and reproduce on a human). It's similar to poison ivy - you touch this fox with your bare skin and you will get a scabies rash (I know from experience - I've had it twice). Know what you're getting into... I wouldn't ask for your help if we didn't need it to save his life. If you get an opportunity to get him into a kennel or crate and you have some gloves or other protection and feel you can do so safely, please help us get him. He can still recover from this infection. He can be whole again, like his brother Hubble, who is a gorgeous fox again after treatment. We just need your help to make it happen!
