Last week, ALS United Mid-Atlantic participated in a tour of the ALS research labs at Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center. The tour was organized by Daniela Zarnescu, PhD, to showcase the lab’s progress in understanding ALS at all levels of disease progression.

The ALS research lab and clinic have grown significantly since Dr. Zachary Simmons first launched the ALS Center at Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center nearly 30 years ago. Dr. Zarnescu answered questions from the ALS United Mid-Atlantic team, including local patients who are engaged in ongoing research studies. The tour included researchers with decades of experience and younger students who are adding their own valuable insights to advance the future of ALS research.

What an incredible night at the ballpark! Before the game, we were honored to gather with our friends at I AM ALS for a special pre-game meetup, and capture a huge community photo outside the stadium in front of the Liberty Bell, a powerful reminder that no one faces ALS alone.

Inside the ballpark, Phillies fans once again showed what this community is all about. The Phillies' ALS Awareness Night raised more than $710,000 to support ALS care, services, and research.

A special thank you to the Philadelphia Phillies for their unwavering commitment to the ALS community. For more than four decades, the Phillies have helped raise awareness, advance research, and support families affected by ALS, and we are incredibly grateful for their partnership. We are deeply grateful to Asplundh Tree Expert, LLC, our Lou Gehrig Day sponsors, and the people living with ALS who were at the heart of this special night, as well as their families, advocates, volunteers, and every fan who came together in support of the ALS community.

From the ALS Lineup of Courage to the overwhelming generosity shown throughout the night, the message was clear: our community is strong, united, and determined to keep pushing forward in the fight against ALS.

Thank you for standing with us, raising awareness, and helping bring hope to families affected by ALS. Together, we are making a difference.

Were you with us at the ballpark? We'd love to relive the night through your lens! Share your photos in the comments, send us a direct message, or email them to us. Thank you for helping us capture and celebrate the community, courage, and hope that made ALS Awareness Night so memorable.

The Jefferson Open House was such a wonderful event! We're grateful to the Jefferson Weinberg ALS Center for opening their doors and sharing the incredible work being done to advance ALS research and care. We're proud to partner with a team so dedicated to supporting people living with ALS and their families every step of the way.

May is ending. Our work is not.

This month, we shared science, opened our doors, and ran a few unexpected races in the name of ALS Awareness. But what we built together is more than a series of calendar events—it is a lasting momentum of collaboration, where every single milestone depends on many hands, many minds, and shared goals all moving in the same direction.

In the fight against ALS, the bench and the clinic are inseparable. The discoveries we chase in the laboratory are entirely driven by the real-world resilience of our patients and their families. Every breakthrough in research transforms into the care, support, and hope we deliver in our clinic every single day.

Awareness doesn't stop when the month changes. We will keep pushing forward together, every single day. Because our patients and their families deserve nothing less.
