🐒 Today is Kemp’s Ridley Day! 🐒

As the most endangered sea turtle species in the world, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles face countless challenges throughout their lives. From accidental fishing hook injuries to entanglement and habitat threats, these remarkable turtles often need a helping hand to make it back home.

At the CARE Center, we are proud to care for Kemp’s ridleys alongside the many loggerhead and green sea turtles that come through our rehabilitation facility each year. Today, we celebrate the resilience of Kemp’s ridleys and all those working to protect them for future generations.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s sea turtle release! Be sure to check back tomorrow as we'll be sharing photos from today's release! πŸ’™πŸŒŠπŸ’

🌊🐒 Happy World Oceans Day! 🐒🌊

Every sea turtle we rescue is a reminder of just how important a healthy ocean is.

This year, we proudly celebrated a major milestone: 1,000 sea turtles successfully rehabilitated since 2015!

On World Oceans Day, we're grateful for the dedicated staff, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters who have helped make this achievement possible. Every turtle released back into the Gulf represents hope for the future of our oceans.

Together, we can protect the waters these incredible animals call home. Thank you for helping us make a difference, one turtle at a time. πŸ’™πŸŒŠ

A special thank you to our community partners, whose support helps make our rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts possible: Okaloosa Gas, Saltwater Restaurants, Inc., Florida Power & Light, and The St. Joe Community Foundation, Inc.

Meet Degas 🐒

Degas, a 108-pound loggerhead sea turtle, arrived at the Gulfarium CARE Center on May 29 after being rescued from Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.

He was accidentally hooked in the left front flipper armpit area with a large J hook. Upon arrival, our veterinary team successfully removed the hook and began supportive care to help him recover.

Currently, Degas is receiving fluids and vitamin B while our team closely monitors his progress. The good news is that he's bright, alert, and responsive, which are encouraging signs that he is recovering very well.

Please join us in welcoming Degas and we'll keep you updated on his progress. πŸ’™πŸ’

Meet Frida 🐒

At 177 pounds, Frida is one of the largest patients currently receiving care at the Gulfarium CARE Center!

This impressive loggerhead sea turtle arrived on May 26 after being rescued from Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. Frida was found with multiple hooks, including a large shark hook in her back right flipper, a J hook in the right side of her mouth, and a sabiki hook in the left side of her mouth. Thankfully, all of the hooks have since been successfully removed by our veterinary team.

Frida is receiving supportive care, including fluids, vitamins, and antibiotics, and has been doing great in one of our rehabilitation pools. πŸ’™

Meet Da Vinci 🎨🐒

Da Vinci, a 98-pound loggerhead sea turtle, arrived at the Gulfarium CARE Center on May 23 after being rescued from Pensacola Beach Fishing Pier.

He was accidentally hooked in the mouth by a fisherman, and radiographs revealed a second hook internally. Upon arrival, Da Vinci was bright, alert, and responsive, and our veterinary team quickly began supportive care with fluids and vitamins while preparing for treatment.

The hook in Da Vinci's mouth has since been successfully removed, but he remains on "hook duty" as our team continues working to safely address the internal hook. In the meantime, he is receiving close monitoring and supportive care as he continues his recovery journey. πŸ’™πŸ’

Meet Carlos 🐒

Carlos arrived at the Gulfarium CARE Center on May 18 after being rescued from Russell-Fields Pier. He was hooked by a fisherman and found with fishing line wrapped around a pier pylon.

During his intake exam, our team removed two external hooks, and radiographs revealed two hooks in his esophagus and two additional internal hooks in his stomach. Carlos came in very active, with mild algae and barnacle coverage that has since been safely removed by our team.

He is currently receiving care and close monitoring as we help him on his road to recovery. Send Carlos some love! πŸ’™

May was a busy month at the Gulfarium CARE Center and while some patients require months of rehabilitation, others can return home much sooner πŸ’™πŸ’

Three of those patients, Sputnik, Agnes, and Saffron, all arrived in May and were healthy enough to be released back into the Gulf last Thursday.

πŸ”Ή Sputnik was hooked in the mouth by a fisherman and successfully recovered off a fishing pier. During intake, our team discovered an additional hook in the underside of the neck and both were successfully removed.

πŸ”Ή Agnes was foul hooked by a fisherman, but fortunately, radiographs showed no internal hooks, and she responded well to treatment.

πŸ”Ή Saffron was foul-hooked in the right front flipper and had two additional external hooks, which were all removed, and she recovered well.

Thank you to everyone who reports injured sea turtles and supports our rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Together, we're helping more turtles get a second chance. πŸŒŠπŸ’™

Meet Emily for this week’s ! 🌊🐒

Emily is currently a student at the University of West Florida studying marine biology and joined our volunteer team to gain hands-on husbandry experience. One of her favorite parts of volunteering has been watching the incredible progress our patients make as they heal and prepare to return to the wild. Emily's willingness to learn and grow along with our team has been so rewarding to watch!

We’re so thankful to have passionate future marine scientists like Emily helping care for our sea turtle patients every day! πŸ’™
