Ever wonder where that $9.50 for your Conservation Stamp actually goes?

It’s not just another fee: it’s an investment in the future of the River Valley. These funds are used directly by the AGFC to improve habitat and increase public access across our state. Right here in our backyard, stamp funding helps support the intensive management needed at places like Fort Chaffee to keep our native grasslands healthy and our bird populations thriving.

When you purchase your stamp, you're directly contributing to the herbicide work, prescribed burns, and seedings that make our local hunting spots successful. It’s conservation by the people, for the people.

Ever wonder why some fields are full of quail while others are silent? The secret is the "Habitat Mosaic."

Quail don't just need one type of cover; they need a mix. Nesting cover, brood-rearing cover, and escape cover all need to be within a "softball throw" of each other. When our Farm Bill Biologists walk a property in the River Valley, we're often looking for that missing piece: whether it's a lack of bare ground for chicks to move or a need for more woody edges.

Creating this mosaic is what turns a simple field into a thriving covey headquarters. If you're not sure what's missing on your land, we can help you find it.

Thinking about using prescribed fire on your property but feeling a bit nervous? You're not alone.

While fire is one of the most effective tools we have for restoring native grasslands and creating brood rearing cover, we know it can be intimidating. That’s where our Farm Bill Biologists come in. We don't just recommend fire: we walk you through the entire process. From planning firebreaks to understanding weather windows, we provide the technical expertise to ensure the job is done safely and effectively.

Using fire correctly helps clear out the thick 'Green Wall' of invasives and encourages the diverse, open habitat that our local quail and turkey depend on. It’s about working with nature to get the best results for your land.

A massive win for the Fort Smith outdoor community.

We are thrilled to welcome the new Bass Pro Shops to our city. Beyond being a destination for gear, this opening represents a major boost for conservation awareness in the River Valley. More folks getting outdoors means more voices for our local habitat and wildlife.

Whether you are picking up a new pair of boots or just browsing, we encourage you to think about the habitat that makes our outdoor traditions possible. Let’s use this new energy to grow our chapter and strengthen our impact on the ground at Fort Chaffee and beyond.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Bass Pro.

How do we know our habitat work is making a difference? We look at success stories like Stone Prairie WMA.

Stone Prairie has become a "gold standard" for restoration in Arkansas, showing exactly what is possible when we prioritize native grasses and diverse brood rearing cover. At Fort Chaffee and across the River Valley, we are using these same blueprints to guide our restoration efforts. By focusing on the right ecoregion-specific plants and consistent management, we are working to replicate those thriving bird populations right here at home.

Conservation is a marathon, and having a proven model helps us ensure every acre we manage is a step toward a better future for local wildlife.

Have you noticed a thick wall of green creeping into our local fields? We call it the Green Wall, and it is a major threat to wildlife habitat in the River Valley.

Invasive species like Callery Pear and Chinese Tallow may look fine in a yard, but at Fort Chaffee and surrounding lands, they are aggressive invaders. These plants grow so dense they choke out the native grasses and forbs our quail chicks need for survival. Without that essential brood rearing cover, our local populations cannot thrive.

When invasives take over, they create a monoculture with no food or room to move for young birds. Identifying these plants is the first step to reclaiming our habitat. Let’s work together to clear the Green Wall and restore the open, diverse landscapes our ecoregion depends on.

Are you a landowner looking for management advice? We are here to help.
