The Darby House extends its sincere appreciation to Garrison Commander Colonel Strong for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to preserving military heritage surrounding 10th Mountain and General Darby. It was a privilege to meet him, along with many outstanding members of the United States Military contingent in Italy.

We are grateful for your service and for strengthening the connection between today’s Soldiers and the legacy they carry forward. RLTW

Great company, good food and friendly staff. This location was a bunker at one point in time and is now a restaurant.

This intersection of history and contemporary food culture creates a powerful, tangible bridge between past and present, engaging new audiences in meaningful ways. For the Darby House this is recognizing adaptive reuse that exemplifies how historical interpretation can evolve—transforming sites of conflict into spaces of Italian culture and culinary delight.

Darby House Participates in 2026 Darby 40 Miler

PESCHIERA DEL GARDA, ITALY (April 30, 2026) — The Darby House proudly participated in the annual Darby 40 Miler, a 40-mile (64 km) memorial hike/run held each April 30 along Lake Garda, honoring Brigadier General William O. Darby and the legacy of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and Darby’s Rangers.

Beginning in Peschiera del Garda and concluding in Torbole, this 12-hour, self-guided endurance event brings together military personnel and civilians from around the world in a shared tribute to service, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of Fort Smith, Arkansas native General William O. Darby.

This year’s event featured a strong presence from U.S. Army Rangers, including members of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, whose professionalism and physical endurance set a clear standard of excellence throughout the course.

The Darby House remains committed to preserving and promoting the legacy of General Darby and the Rangers through international partnerships, educational initiatives, and participation in commemorative events such as the Darby 40 Miler.

For more information or to support the mission, visit www.darbyhouse.org.

Special thanks to Ranger Rick Tscherne; Ben Appleby and Antonella Previdi; the leadership of Sister City Nago-Torbole; and all who contributed to making this event possible.

Dedicated to every service member unnamed but not forgotten. “HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY A COMRADE ONLY KNOWN TO GOD”.
At the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, the careful sanding and cleaning of military headstones is a solemn act of preservation and remembrance. Each marble marker represents an American service member who gave their life during the Italian Campaign of World War II, many connected to the legacy of the U.S. Army Rangers and Brigadier General William O. Darby. Using approved, sand respectfully gathered from Anzio Beach—each Ranger headstone was gently cleaned and sanded. This work is more than maintenance; it is a deliberate tribute carried out with discipline and respect, reinforcing our commitment to preserve their legacy and ensure they are never forgotten.

We visited the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery today to honor the Rangers laid to rest there. Rather than focusing on just one or two individuals, we dedicated the entire day to paying our respects to all of them.
