In honor of LGBT History Month let’s learn about the Stonewall Riots:

In June of 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. Back then, being LGBTQ+ could cost you your job, your home, your freedom, and sometimes your life. Police routinely targeted q***r spaces, arrested people, and publicly humiliated them simply for existing.

But on June 28, 1969, something changed. The LGBTQ+ community fought back.

What followed was several nights of protests and resistance against decades of discrimination, police brutality, and the criminalization of q***r people. Trans people, drag queens, gay men, le****ns, and other marginalized members of the community were part of that resistance.

Stonewall wasn’t the beginning of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, but it became one of the most significant turning points in our history.

And here’s what we think people need to understand. The rights we have today weren’t handed to us because society suddenly decided we deserved equality. They were fought for by people who were tired of being treated as less than human.

Pride didn’t begin as a celebration. It began as resistance.

Stonewall is a reminder that progress has never come from quietly accepting injustice. It comes from people who refuse to tolerate it.

And frankly, that’s a history worth remembering, especially when those same rights are still being challenged today.
