The observation of National American Indian Heritage Month has its roots in Public Law 99-471. Over several years the observation was moved to different months but in 1990 Public Law 101-343 set the month-long observance in November. Each year the President issues a Proclamation in recognition of the observance. National American Indian Heritage Month is observed from 1 - 30 November of each year.

In honor of , the Veterans Legacy Program is celebrating the legacy of Brig. Gen. Virgilio N Cordero. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 6, 1893, Cordero moved to the U.S., where he earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University. He then went on to graduate from officer candidate school entering the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. He served in WWI as a captain and by December 1941 he was a colonel in command of the 31st Infantry Regiment stationed in the Philippines. The following year while in command of the 52nd Infantry Regiment of the Filipino Army and the 31st Infantry, Cordero and his men were forced to surrender to Japanese forces going on to endure the Bataan Death March and four years of captivity. After the Japanese surrender in 1945 Cordero served in Italy where he was awarded the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit for his service in the Philippines. He would go on to serve 36 years in the U.S. Army before retiring in 1953. Cordero wrote a book about his time served in WWII titled "My Experience during the War with Japan" published in 1950. He passed away June 6, 1980, and is interred in Puerto Rico National Cemetery.
