Fort Scott African American Heritage Reunion Fort Scott Family and Friends Reunion The Fort Scott African American Heritage Reunion was established in January of 1997. J. Hawkins School once stood.

The purpose of this was to provide a town wide homecoming reunion called The Fort Scott Family and Friends Reunion. This not just for African Americans, but for all races and cultures that had lived or lives in Fort Scott, and or had attended the E.J. Hawkins/Plaza School and public school for all ages. . Before the group was established in 1997, reunions like this took place every year in the 50’

s 60’s & 70’s. The Committee also helped to enhance promote knowledge and awareness of Fort Scott African American History through educational memorials such as the E. Hawkins Wayside Memorial and social activities in the Fort Scott area. As well to establish and endowed scholarship assistance to select Fort Scott High School graduates. The Committee also worked with the Old Fort to establish a wayside pictorial memorial where the E.J. Prominent Americans who attended Fort Scott's African American Schools included George Washington Carver and Gordon Parks. Carver is a known agronomist, botanist, chemist, educator, and artist Parks, an Author, composer, photographer and poet, Gordon Parks and George Washington Carver both attended.Today, these schools are no longer in existence.
