Fort Riley Signal Facts | Then & Now

In 1888, Quarters 1 on Barry Avenue stood as the home of the Commanding General at Fort Riley.

From his third-floor balcony, he watched Soldiers drill across the parade field.

But how did his orders travel across those fields?

Not by radio.
Not by satellite.
Not by fiber.

They traveled by flag.

Signal Soldiers of the United States Army Signal Corps used wig-wag flags — a system developed by Albert J. Myer — to transmit the Commander’s intent across distance with precision and discipline.

One flag.
One signal.
Zero mistakes.

Today we operate in cyber, space, and multi-domain operations — but the mission hasn’t changed:

Get the message through.

From balconies and battlefields to satellites and secure networks — Signal Soldiers remain the voice of command.

165 Years of Connecting the Force 🇺🇸⚡

For 165 years, the U.S. Army Signal Corps has been the backbone of communication for our Army. Since its establishment in 1860, Signal Soldiers have ensured commanders could see, decide, and act—no matter the environment or the enemy.

During World War I, Signal Soldiers were the bridge to victory—laying wire under fire, operating radios in chaos, and ensuring information moved faster than the fight. Communication wasn’t a luxury; it was the difference between success and failure.

Today, that mission is more critical than ever. In Large-Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), Signal Soldiers are not just supporting the fight—we are shaping it. From expeditionary networks to cyberspace operations, we now operate across multiple domains, enabling convergence and dominance against near-peer threats.

As we honor 165 years of excellence, we also accept our responsibility: to instill technical mastery, adaptability, and courage in the next generation of Signal Soldiers. The technology may change, but our purpose remains the same—to connect the Army, empower the warfighter, and win.

Yesterday, we were the bridge.
Today, we are the future.

📡 To All Signalers—Have a Great Weekend! 🇺🇸

As we head into the weekend, let’s take a moment to recognize the professionals who keep our Army connected—our Signal Soldiers, Civilians, Veterans, and Families.

Your commitment to Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage is what keeps our formations strong and our mission moving forward. Whether you’re supporting operations, training the next generation, or mentoring teammates, the Signal community continues to set the standard.

🔐 OPSEC is everyone’s responsibility.
Be mindful of what we share—online and offline. Protect the mission, protect the force, and protect each other.

Stay safe, stay connected, and have a great weekend, Signal Family.

📡 Visit to the Danger Voice Signal Universe (DVSU) 📡

Yesterday we had the opportunity to visit the Danger Voice Signal Universe (DVSU), where Signal Soldiers are actively training and preparing to earn CompTIA A+ certification.

During the visit, the 1ID G6 OIC emphasized the importance of “hunting the good stuff” — seeking out professional development opportunities, mastering our craft, and pursuing multiple military and industry certifications that strengthen both mission readiness and individual growth.

Investing in certifications like CompTIA A+ not only sharpens technical skills, but also empowers Signalers to stay relevant, competitive, and lethal in today’s operational environment.

Proud to see Soldiers fully engaged, motivated, and committed to becoming the best communicators our Army needs.
Train hard. Get certified. Stay Signal strong. ⚡📶

📡 Signal Is a Family | Flint Hills – Fort Riley, KS 📡

Last Friday, the G6 sat down for a luncheon with Signal Soldiers to do something simple—but powerful: connect.

This gathering was about more than a meal. It was about unity, integrity, reachability, and cohesion—the values that keep our formations strong and our networks trusted. Conversations like these reinforce what makes the Signal Corps special: leaders who are present, Soldiers who are heard, and a culture that values people as much as technology.

Moments like this are exactly what the Army Signal Corps Regimental Association (SCRA) – Flint Hills Chapter stands for.

We welcome every Signaler—active duty, veteran, civilian, supporter—to be part of this extended family. SCRA exists to strengthen these bonds, promote mentorship, and ensure no Signaler walks alone, from first formation to final formation.
