DUVCW Mary Edwards Walker Detached Tent #12 of the Treasure Coast, FL We are a"detached tent" of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War on the Treasure Coast of Florida in Port St. Lucie. Lucie West in front of Lowe's.

We meet the third Friday of every other month (June, August, October, December, February, and April) at 11:00 a.m. at the Golden Corral Restaurant in a Private Room located in St. Mary Edwards Walker was an American abolitionist, prohibitionist, prisoner of war and surgeon. As of 2017, she is the only woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor. She was captured by Confederate forces after crossing e

nemy lines to treat wounded civilians and arrested as a spy. She was sent as a prisoner of war to Richmond, Virginia, until released in a prisoner exchange. After the war, she was approved for the highest United States Armed Forces decoration for bravery, the Medal of Honor, for her efforts during the Civil War. She is the only woman to receive the medal and one of only eight civilians to receive it. Her name was deleted from the Army Medal of Honor Roll in 1917 (along with over 900 others); however it was restored in 1977. After the war, she was a writer and lecturer supporting the women's suffrage movement until her death in 1919.

In the tradition of honoring the fallen, our National President Carol Comp or her representative will place a wreath in honor of Abraham Lincoln at the annual ceremony tomorrow on February 12 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President, was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky and led the United States during the Civil War. As Sisters we pledge to “keep green the memory.”

As we celebrate July 4th in our country let us remember to thank all service members past and present who make our freedom possible. With gratitude we particularly remember our great grandfathers who fought bravely to save the Union. Let us also and especially be reminded to salute those in our military forces who today are deployed throughout the world for our protection. May God bless America, land that we love!

SUVCW members reenacted the reading of the freedom proclamation at Gifford Historical Museum and Cultural Center (Vero Beach) as part of its annual May Day Celebration.
