Each year the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society awards merit scholarships to worthy high school graduates in the Treasure Coast area who have displayed high academic achievement, good citizenship and promising musicianship. The scholarships are awarded to graduates in memory of local jazz musicians who have died.
My dad, Tom Omans, was a long-time trumpet player who loved jazz. He was mentored by his friend Marcus Belgrave, an American jazz trumpet player from Detroit. In 2009, my Dad began talking about mentoring kids in jazz, and shortly afterwards he passed on unexpectedly. In 2010, my Mom, brothers, sisters and I began a scholarship in his name through the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. Each year, the Society continues to award a scholarship in my Dad’s name as long as funds are available.
Keeping my Dad's name alive by awarding merit scholarships to young musicians.
