SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT

The beach should be an unfettered joy to be shared by all!

This was a picture of me, cane in hand, on my first return to the beach after major surgeries. What a glorious moment.

The community of Fort Pierce Shores on North Hutchinson Island, Florida.has a beautiful and precious natural beach that the public may access via 3 natural paths and enjoy with no restrictions. This is the way it has been for over 60 years and it is the way we want to keep it!
But, a new owner of some of the beachfront property is stressing his ownership of the beach to the mean high-water mark.
Therefore, in order to avoid future disputes over the public's right to use this beach, Fort Pierce Shores Preservation, Inc. is undertaking an initiative to request that the St. Lucie County Commission seek a judicial declaration affirming recreational customary use. This would guarantee that the public will continue to have unfettered access to the entire beach East of the frontal dune.
Our initial request applies to the beachfront along N. Ocean Dr. in Fort Pierce Shores, but we are considering expanding this request to cover North Beach and South Beach in St. Lucie County.

A developer purchased 13 acres of our beachfront property for $7.1 million. Previously this property was essentially considered unbuildable because of court-affirmed restrictions. Now they are trying to develop this property in spite of the restrictions, and practically all of it is East of the CCCL. It seems as if environmental protection regulations can all be violated with the right permit applications! We are trying to prevent destruction of this Natural Treasure - because once it is gone, it is gone for good!

Adjacent to the Fort Pierce Inlet State park, and the Atlantic Ocean, we enjoy an abundance of wildlife and are very protective of it all. Developers are buying up every available piece of land they can get, and pushing development further and further East of the Coastal Construction Control line (CCCL). Public officials seem reluctant to stand up against overdevelopment...and once it is developed it is No Longer Available to Everyone!

Fort Pierce Shores is a quiet little old-style beachfront community. Average folks live here with no gates and few fences, enjoying the simple, natural beauty of our pristine beach. We are at the southern end of North Hutchinson Island where the Navy Seals used to live and train in WWII.
