Professional Development Workshops at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium:

Teachers of Grades 6-12
Mote Marine Laboratory will host a series of professional development workshops for formal classroom teachers. With these workshops, we hope to help inform and encourage best practices for collaborative teacher professional development integrating science and technology. Participating teachers will gain experience using appropriate technologies and will create multi‐media teaching resources for use in their classrooms. Additionally, teachers will be encouraged to share their new knowledge, resources and lessons with their school colleagues. Workshop content will be aligned with Florida standards, as well as county instructional resources with the ability to meet the specific needs of each school, grade, and class.

Youth Making Ripples Film Festival and Competition is open for submissions!

The Contest is an ocean conservation-inspired film festival and competition which challenges K–12 students to produce short ocean documentaries (< 5 min.) about problems that face the ocean, and possible solutions to these issues. The website (www.youthmakingripples.org) provides film maker resources, examples of previous winning films, and submission details. Students can win small scholarships and participate in an annual shark tagging expedition (teacher included). The deadline for submission is December 5th, 2017.

In addition, this year's finalists will also become part of the traveling film festival and have the opportunity to debut to audiences around the country. New inquiry-based lessons will be posted on their webpage in the coming months.

The Florida Oceanographic Society is seeking an education specialist to carry out daily educational programming for visitors to the FOS Coastal Center.

This position involves considerable public speaking. The Education Specialist will conduct formal educational presentations in front of large audiences, as well as informal educational lessons at our invertebrate touch tank, sea turtle pavilion, gamefish lagoon aquarium, butterfly garden, and inside of our nature center.

The Education Specialist will oversee Florida Oceanographic Society’s field trip and birthday party programs, including trip development, scheduling, and bookkeeping. Additionally, the Education Specialist will help lead field trips, group visits, outreach education programming, summer camp sessions, and sea turtle walks.

Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, ecology, conservation, environmental science, or science education
-Minimum of 4 months of science teaching experience in a formal (classroom) or informal (zoo, aquarium, nature center) setting
-Exceptionally strong and dynamic public speaker
-Comfortable teaching adults and children of all ages
-Comfortable interacting with the public on a daily basis
-Comfortable working in the water (e.g., seining or snorkeling)
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Previous experience working with children

We’re in the final days of registration for the 2017 Youth Ocean Conservation Summit which will take place on Saturday, December 9 at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, FL!

To register for the Summit visit www.yocs.org and complete the online registration form by this Sunday, December 3, 2017. The registration fee for the event is $14 per participant, and includes lunch, snacks, and program materials. A limited number of Youth Ocean Conservation T-shirts designed by renowned marine life artist Wyland will be available on sale at the event for $6. On the site you can also view the complete Summit program where you can learn more about the sessions and speakers featured at the event.
