Our Story

The Little River Waterkeeper is part of a global clean water environmental organization, The Waterkeeper Alliance. First established in 2012 as an advocacy program for One World Adventure, LRW staff and volunteers now patrol, monitor and educate full time, for the conservation of Little River, a sub-watershed of the Upper Coosa Watershed. Little River has three major forks and stretches from Walker, Chattooga and Dade counties in Georgia, along Lookout Mountain into Northeast Alabama where it flows through DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon before emptying into the Coosa River in Cherokee County, Alabama. The river is Federally Protected and is listed as an Outstanding National Resource Water which means its waters are pristine. This title however, doesn’t mean Little River doesn’t face threats. Our work is to protect it for future generations.

Clean Water programs include our spring anti-litter campaign, Erase the Waste. In order to prevent litter from entering our waterways, LRWK organizes community cleanups in the Fort Payne and Mentone areas. Swimguide is our summer water monitoring program. Another incredible program that teaches our youth the value of clean water is the DeKalb County Drinking Water Festival. The annual event serves over 1000 4th grade students and their teachers and is completely free and held on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community College. “Keep Little River Wild” launched in 2012 in partnership with the Alabama Rivers Alliance and is an effort to study and nominate Little River as a National Wild & Scenic River.

We depend on membership, donations and grants in order to protect Little River. We invite you to follow our progress and choose to support our efforts. Cheers! To Clean Water, Clean Air, and Healthy Communities.
