Youth Leadership DeKalb held its graduation celebration for the current 2024-2025 class today at the The Warehouse in Fort Payne. It has been a very successful year and the future looks bright for these young leaders. Each student received a medallion to be worn at their high school graduation next year and a certificate of completion. Two students received full scholarships to Northeast Alabama Community College: Cassie Burns and Yadira Hernandez. Congratulations to everyone! Thank you to all our sponsors/donors, the DeKalb County BOE, the Fort Payne City BOE, Cornerstone Christian Academy, and Northeast Alabama Community College. Without their continued support none of this would be possible. Again, congratulations to all and we look forward to a fantastic 2025-2026 year!

The Youth Leadership Class met today and the topic of today was “Tourism”. The day started off at the Reed House with presentations by John Dersham, and Mary Reed. Mary was also gracious enough to provide breakfast to our students as well. Next, they loaded the bus and headed to Orbix Glass, where each student got to blow their own ornament, and hear from Brittany Hughes (Desota State Park Naturalist) on non-venomous snakes. They even got to hold a few of them! Zaxby’s provided a great lunch for the students before they headed back to Fort Payne to the Depot Museum. Cindy Hill gave great overview of the history of the Depot And all the memorabilia inside. Students made their way to the Alabama Statues and Pete the Cat mural for pictures before being dismissed. Today’s class was very informative about not only tourism in Fort Payne and DeKalb County But the state as well. Thank you to all our sponsors, we couldn’t do this without you.

On Wednesday, November 20, Youth Leadership Dekalb had their 3rd class event of the year. They learned about State and Local Government. They began the day with breakfast and hearing from Senate Majority Leader Steve Livingston. After a short walk to the courthouse, students heard from Summer Summerford, District Attorney, as well as Andrew Hairston, presiding Circuit Judge, Jeremy Taylor, Circuit Judge, Shaunathan Bell, Circuit Judge and Jeff McCurdy, District Judge-Elect. They gave the students a little insight into their positions, and what it takes to become a lawyer or Judge. A mock trial was held and each student had a role. That is always such a fun and educational activity. At the conclusion of the trial, students traveled back to the Fort Payne City Hall for lunch and heard from Baker Allen, Director of Governemt Affairs (AL league of Municipalities). Several mayors from through the county and council members concluded the day with a great presentation.

They met at Kelly’s Kitchen for breakfast and heard from Angie Jones (USDA) before loading the bus and heading to the Auburn Research Center in Crossville. Clint McLemore was the Guest Speaker there. The class then traveled to KP FARMS in Geraldine and had a speaker from the Cattleman’s Association. YLD finished out the day with a tour of LOVE FARMS in Fort Payne, where they also provided lunch to the class. It was another packed day for the class and we look forward to November.
