Nick Price withdrew from the 1991 PGA Championship before the tournament began. His caddie's wife was having a baby and Price pulled out to be there. That opened a spot.
The spot went to the 9th alternate. A 25-year-old from Arkansas named John Daly who drove through the night to get to Crooked Stick in Indiana, arrived with no practice round, no course walk, no preparation in the normal sense of the word.
He bombed it. He made birdies. He shot 12-under and won by three shots.
It was his first PGA Tour victory. He won it at a major. He had been on tour for less than two years.
The odds of that sequence of events happening were so long that most people still struggle to believe it actually did.
