Wildlife Wednesday: The Stingray!

Next time you visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, don’t forget to take a peek at the Caloosahatchee River! The river is home to all kinds of marine life, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some swimming right along the shore. Stingrays are experts at blending in with the river bottom, but we managed to catch a glimpse of this one as he cruised along the riverbed!

Homeschool Classes at Edison Ford: Geology, Geography and Paleontology🌎

November 4 (grades 1-3), 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
November 5 (grades 4-6), 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Learn about Earth’s 4.54-billion-year geological history which covers its formation from a solar nebula, the evolution of its crust, oceans, and atmosphere, and the development of life! Learn about stratigraphy and rock cycles. Through simple hands-on activities, students use science process skills to conduct the Moh’s scale of identifying rocks and create crayon rock cycles to take home!

Classes take place in an outdoor classroom environment (weather permitting).

🌴 Meet the Palms! 🌴

The Estates is home to a diverse collection of palm species, including both native and exotic varieties. Each one adds to the unique landscape and character of the property, while also telling a small part of its botanical history.

Our Horticulture team works to preserve that history by maintaining the landscape as close as possible to the way it looked in the early 1900s. When trees are lost over time, the team carefully works to replant and restore them, helping to preserve the character and beauty of the original Estates for generations to come.

Today’s Palm: The Royal Palm

🔬 Scientific name: Roystonea regia
🌎 Native to: Florida, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

What makes it special?

Did you know Royal Palms helped earn Fort Myers its nickname, the “City of Palms”? 🌴 Although Royal Palms grew naturally in the Everglades, Edison had the first trees shipped in from Cuba by sailboat because transporting them through the dense swamps was nearly impossible.

Edison originally planned to line the road with Royal Poincianas, but ultimately chose Royal Palms because they stay green year-round—creating the iconic palm-lined boulevard we know today. What started as a few hundred trees near Edison’s winter estate eventually grew into roughly 15 miles of towering Royal Palms along McGregor Boulevard, with some reaching more than 75 feet tall!

Get Ready for Saturday!🧵

October 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join us for our annual “Airing of the Quilts” quilt show, featuring a beautiful display of quilts from the Southwest Florida Quilters Guild—plus quilts for sale and on-site appraisals by renowned quilt appraiser Lars Cain. Verbal appraisals will be offered for $25 and the fee for a written appraisal will be $35 per quilt.

The quilt show is included with admission or free to Edison and Ford members. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at our ticket counter.
