To all Managers and Players: Spring 2026

This is to address the "Rabbit Runner" rule being tested during our Spring Season. After one week of games, it appears to be misunderstood and misused. The Rabbit Runner option is to be used "Only" if you are 80 years old or older, or if you have a Dr.’s excuse for an injury or limitation. It's not to be used for slow runners. The league has enough rules to accommodate players at all skill levels.

The Rabbit Runner Rule is used as follows:
Managers must inform the other team of a Rabbit Runner BEFORE the game starts.
Players who request a Rabbit Runner must use the runner for the ENTIRE game.
A Rabbit Runner can only run once per inning.
The Rabbit Runner starts at the inside corner of the backstop, on the 1st base side.
The Rabbit Runner can only run to 1st base. Running past 1st base is an Out.
If the Batter accidentally runs more than 10 feet towards 1st base, the Rabbit Runner is Out.

Thank you for attention to this matter

Is there any softball SSUSA rule about a runner yelling as he approaches a bag?
Yes, in Senior Softball-USA (SSUSA) and most other softball rules, a runner yelling as he approaches a bag can be called for verbal interference if, in the umpire's judgment, it is a distraction that hinders or confuses a defensive player attempting to make a play.

The official SSUSA rulebook (and other associations like SPA and USA Softball) defines interference as an act that impedes, hinders, or confuses a defensive player. This can be: Physical contact.
Verbal distraction or any other type of distraction.

The key factor is the umpire's judgment of whether the yelling affected the defensive player's ability to execute the play. For example, a runner yelling something like "boot!" to try and distract an infielder is a common scenario where verbal interference might be called.
Additionally, SSUSA rules include a Code of Ethics which requires participants to conduct themselves as a gentleman or lady and not to taunt or degrade an opponent. Yelling at a fielder with the intent to distract is generally considered unsportsmanlike conduct, which is prohibited under these rules.

In short, while general "chatter" is often part of the game, yelling specifically to hinder a defensive play is against the rules and an umpire can call the RUNNER OUT for interference.
