The Dunbar Jupiter Hammon Public Library was started by a group of concerned citizens in Dunbar who wanted a library within the Dunbar community for the convenience of its people.The public library in downtown Fort Myers was quite a distance. And public transportation wasn’t available.
Integration was just beginning. And we weren’t well received. We needed books about ourselves and our culture as well.
This early unofficial Friends group pushed the County Commission to open a facility in Dunbar and succeeded! When the library was finally opened, the staff worked on a voluntary basis.
Join us Sat., April [email protected] us celebrate,have some food,some fun,learn some history and meet the only surviving member of that early Friends group who got our library started.

Hello! The Friends of the Dunbar-Jupiter Hammon Public Library was formed in 1995. The group is composed of concerned citizens who are dedicated to developing and maintaining a library that meets the cultural, educational, and resource needs of the Dunbar community: a library that residents of the Dunbar community expect and deserve.
